Mother’s Day & Urban Decay Eye Palette Giveaway

Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and my husband has promised me that I am going to love it. It’s been a very hectic couple of weeks and we haven’t had any down time, so my husband promises Sunday to be a very relaxing day for us, especially for me. Honestly all I want for Mother’s day is to spend it with my 2 favourite people: my husband and son, to be with them without any distractions and to honestly not have to cook or clean. I can’t wait!!!!! :)

Mother's Day

For me being a mother has been the most rewarding, frustrating, emotionally draining experience of my life. It has taught me patience beyond anything that I thought I was capable of. It has shown me that just when I think I can’t give anymore, I can. As a mom I have reserves saved for days where I just don’t think I can do it anymore. Being a mother to my son fills me absolute joy and love and wonderment. I stop myself and look at my son and realize that I made this amazing being. It also terrifies me think that I’m also 100% responsible for him, to raise him, to guide, to nurture him. It has not been easy, filled with lots of bumps and many, many, many mistakes along the way, but I wouldn’t change any of it.

So this Mother’s Day, please take some time for yourself, to reflect on your role as a mother, to rejuvenate yourself and thank yourself for being the best mom you can be. Most importantly HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!!!!!!!!

Shorts 5 Ways

I’m so excited for shorts season to finally begin. The weather here has been taunting us. Mother Nature gives us a couple of gorgeous days, and then takes it back and gives us cold and the rain. But ever the optimist, I’m hoping that in a few weeks the warm weather will be here to stay. When I think of Summer, I think of shorts. I think of getting my pasty white legs tanned. I love that shorts come in all shapes, sizes and lengths. Gotta say that I’m kind of liking the short shorts, not the Daisy Duke kind, but the ones that still flatter those of us that are over 30 and are mothers. Below are 5 different ways I styled shorts.

All of these shorts are on sale until May 7 for $15.

I was not sponsored by Old Navy. This is just a great deal and wanted to share it with others.

Shorts are not just for the park anymore. You can dress them up with a blazer and heels or dress them down with a simple white tee and sandals. There are so many different ways you can wear shorts. My favourite way is to add a blazer, t-shirt and wedges. Shorts are so versatile and will make a great addition to your wardrobe. Try getting a printed pair and see all the fabulous outfits you can make.

May this blog inspire you to purchase some shorts this Spring and see all the great outfits you can create.

Embellished Sweatshirt, Leather Leggings & Gift Ideas For The Lady In Your Life

When I saw this sweatshirt on J Crew’s site, I immediately fell in love with it. Jewelled necklines have been huge this Fall and Winter and I was waiting for just the right one. This sweatshirt did not disappoint!!! I was excited to wear it this past weekend, I even wore it to take my son to see Santa :).The jewelled neckline takes this sweatshirt up a notch. I like that you can wear it with something as simple as leggings, or jeans or you can wear it with a shirk or my favourite leather leggings.

Christmas shopping can be extremely stressful especially when shopping for someone that has everything. I thought it would be nice to compile a list of Christmas gifts that most women would appreciate. It’s got everything from candles, to sweaters, to make up, to coffee, to music, to jewelry and even a purse. For me Christmas isn’t about receiving gifts, it’s about giving them. It’s also about putting thought into the gifts I buy. I know that it can get overwhelming and daunting trying to find that “perfect” gift, but if you take the time to think about who you are shopping for and what they like, it isn’t so bad. The person receiving it will really appreciate it :).

Xmas Gifts: Vodka Infused Lemonade

1. J Crew beaded sweater: $116. This sweater would make any woman happy. It’s warm and versatile and would make any outfit pop with the jewelled neckline.

2. Bath & Body Works Mini Candles: 3 for $10. Scented candles make the perfect gift for any woman. We all like candles and these Christmas scents are a perfect complement to the holidays.

3. Stella & Dot Red Cross Body Bag: $104. This fabulous cherry coloured purse also doubles as a clutch. Who doesn’t like a multi tasking gift!!!!!!

4. Banana Republic Fair Isle Sweater: $110. Ok I’m a bit biased, since I have this sweater, but in all honesty it’s the perfect holiday gift. I love the sparkle in it and the fact that it’s Holiday related.

5. Sephora Eye and Lip Palette: $19. This makes the perfect gift for any woman in your life that wears make up. It’s a great palette that has eyeshadows and lip glosses. It’s in a small bejewelled case that makes it convenient for when you travel.

6. Kelly Clarkson’s Christmas CD, Wrapped In Red: $7 (ITunes). I recently bought this cd while I was standing in line at Starbucks (genius of Starbucks to have it right at the cashier). I’m a sucker for Christmas cd’s and I’m also a huge fan of Kelly’s. This cd did not disappoint. Kelly’s rendition of some classic Christmas carols are amazing and I love some new songs she also has on the cd. This cd makes the perfect gift for any Christmas cd lover.

7. Sephora Lip Gloss Set: $19. This set includes 4 lip glosses that any woman, especially teenager would enjoy. The colours are neutral and would look good on any skin type.

8. Stella & Dot’s Kahlo Bib Statement Necklace: $238. Although this necklace is a bit pricey it is worth every penny. Again I’m biased because I have it, but it does make the perfect statement necklace. It adds sparkle and shine to your outfit and I love the mixed metals in it. Perfect holiday gift.

9. Sephora Nail Polish: $15. This set of 5 nail polishes is ideal for that woman who loves well manicured and polished nails!!!!! Great price point and would make a great stocking stuffer :).

10. Starbucks Christmas Blend: $18.95 for 1 lbs. This popular blend is only available once a year and would make a great gift for any coffee lover in your life.

My Top 5 Favorite Natural Face Products

A few years ago, I read a book called Gorgeously Green and it changed the way I look at the products I use on a daily basis. I realized just how many chemicals I’m putting on my face every day and that I didn’t need to continue, that there are alternatives. I have to say that I was more than elated when Sephora opened up here in Vancouver. My eyes used to get irritated whenever I wore Mascara. Now that I switched to wearing Tarte, I never have a problem. All of these products are fabulous. Origins Clay face mask works amazingly well. Definitely worth purchasing!!! They carry a large selection of “natural” face products. Below are my top 5 picks:

1. Bare Minerals: Purifying Face Cleanser

Manic Monday & Stocking Stuffers

mondaykillinme

Yesterday was totally a “Manic Monday”!!! I felt like I was being pulled in 100 different directions. I was in such a hurry to post my blog that I didn’t proof read it properly. I did manage to go back and fix a few things. It was a typical day for a busy mom: I took my son to gymnastics, came home put dinner there (roast in slow cooker), baked cupcakes for the inner city school I volunteer at, did laundry, did some administrative things and went to get our Christmas tree. I will post more about that and our visit with Santa tomorrow. So basically I want to apologize if my post yesterday was a bit discombobulated; I was discombobulated!!!! Here’s hoping for a less stressful week, but with Christmas 3 weeks away, I can’t see that happening.

This is what I am wearing today: a cardigan, dress, leggings and boots. Perfect outfit to run around in.

Turtleneck, Argyle and Sephora’s VIB Holiday Event

Below is what I wore yesterday. It’s sweater wearing season here and I can’t seem to get enough of them, especially turtlenecks.

Turtleneck (R W & Co.). Pants (Gap). Jacket (Jacob). Boots (Browns).

This is what I wore today. I was inspired by another blogger to layer a turtleneck underneath my short-sleeved argyle sweater. This is a great way to keep warm and still wear a short-sleeved sweater in the cold. Here you have it:

Sweater (Jacob). Turtleneck (R W & Co.). Jeans (Gap). Shoes (Aldo). Bracelet (Stella & Dot, Coach). Watch (Guess).

A quick update, I want to thank everyone for their incredibly sweet and kind comments regarding my post about my friend George. I love reading your comments, please keep them coming.

This past Sunday was my first day back at work in 6 weeks. I felt a bit rusty, but all in all things went well. My chest pain stayed away and I managed to work my full 12 hour shift. On Monday morning, I woke up with head congestion and a sore throat. I’m so glad I went to work on Sunday :(. Anyways I saw my specialist yesterday for my follow up and she told me that I will feel some chest pain as this new virus is causing havoc in my chest, but she is happy with my progress. I must continue taking my meds for another 2 months but she said that I am on my way to recovering fully :). Great news!!!! Unfortunately she was right!!! My chest pain came back yesterday with a vengeance. I guess my cold is irritating the sac around my heart. I’m feeling tired and sick but I’m hoping to be on the mend by this weekend. Back to work for this girl on Saturday and Sunday.

Another positive note, the rodents have been taken care of. We had the Pest Detectives come out yesterday and the guy found where our little friends were getting in and out of the house. That has since been sealed off. We have put more traps in our attic and have put bait stations around our house to see how many rats are around. We are hoping that this will take care of our rodent problem. The guy felt quite positive that we will be able to resolve this issue. He also reassured us that this is no where the worst case he has ever seen. Thank God!!!!

So things are finally on the upside. Well at least everything but my health. Let’s hope after I shake this cold that I’ll also be on the mend!!!

Last Thursday, my friend Kathryn and I headed to Sephora for their VIB Holiday Event. I apologize ahead of time for not taking more pictures. I’m still getting used to the idea of blogging and taking pictures, but I did manage to take a couple. We had an amazing time. The girl’s at the Coquitlam Center location were awesome. A great big thank to Athena who was patient with me and helped me find the perfect new lip stick for the holiday :). Below are pictures of Kathryn and I before and after. My before has me already with some makeup on, I forgot to take the picture beforehand).

The Power of One

It’s sunny again today but a cold one. We could have it worse, I know. I decided to wear my skinny pants today with a sweater and my boots. Perfect outfit for a cold, crisp Thursday in November. By the way these skinny pants from the Gap are so comfortable, it’s almost like you are wearing leggings.

Sweater (R W & Co.). Pants (Gap). Boots (Browns)

Coats (Jacob).

I’m really excited to be going to Sephora’s VIB Holiday Shopping Event tonight. I’ve been thinking about doing a post about holiday looks and trends and this will be perfect. Can’t wait to share them with you. Hoping to find the perfect shade of red lipstick for myself :).

I recently finished reading the book “The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay. I’ve heard amazing things about this book and it was recommended to me by one of my friends.

The story takes place in South Africa right before World War II and continues into the 1950′s. This is a tale about a boy named Peekay and his quest to becoming welter-weight champion of the world. The story starts out with Peekay being ripped away from everything he knows, and sent to boarding school because his mother has a nervous breakdown. At the boarding school, Peekay quickly learns that he is different from the other kids. He is a white, circumcised boy who only speaks English. The English are considered the enemy because of a war between them and the African people. Peekay is ridiculed, humiliated and bullied for his differences by a boy he aptly names “The Judge”. “The Judge” tortures Peekay by mentally, physically and emotionally abusing him. Like many children that are bullied Peekay doesn’t have any friends, until he befriends a chicken called “Grandpa Chook”. “Grandpa Chook” soon becomes Peekay’s salvation and hope from his torment.

At the end of the term, Peeky is headed back home, via train, when he meets Hoppie Groenewald. Hoppie instills in Peekay the idea of the power of one: one mind, one heart. Think first with your head, then with your heart. If you can manage to do that, you can do anything you put your mind to. One of my favorite quotes is when Peekay describes the power of one as “one idea, one heart, one mind, one plan, one determination.” (p. 106) From that moment on, Peekay has one thing on his mind: to do whatever it takes for him to become the welter-weight champion of the world.

Through his journey to becoming a boxing champion, Peekay befriends Doc and Miss Bornstein. They become his surrogate parents. They educate him not only about history, language and arithmetic but they teach him the most important lesson of all: to follow your heart. Peekay meets many people along the way who help him in his journey to becoming a boxing champion. The book ends with a dramatic confrontation between Peekay and “The Judge”.

I love how Bryce Courtenay immerses you into Peekay’s world; how eloquently he describes Africa and Peekay’s thoughts. At times you feel like you are there with Peekay, experiencing what he is.

I enjoyed the detailed description of events that happened to Peekay, but found that Bryce Courtenay’s narration would jump large gaps in time. It took 526 pages to get to the final confrontation Peekay has with “The Judge” and then finishes in 4 pages. It felt rushed, like it wasn’t complete. I also found the synopsis on the back of the book to be inaccurate. It wasn’t Peekay’s meeting with Hymie and Gideon that helped him pursue his dreams, it was Hoppie, Doc, Miss Bornstein, Captain Smit and Geel Piet who helped Peekay. They fostered and nurtured Peekay’s quest for welter-weight champion of the world. “The Power of One” is a well written book, with detailed character development. At times I really felt like the characters were real. Bryce Courtenay does a great job of enveloping you into the story.

This book is uplifting because we witness Peekay overcome obstacles and never let the bullying he endured define him. Instead he let it fuel him, kept him from becoming a victim again, which is one of the main themes of this book. Peekay is a good example to kids out there who are being bullied and teased. You shouldn’t let it define you. It should give you strength to know that you can overcome anything. There is a little Peekay inside each and everyone of us. He represents the struggles we all have to go through to achieve our goals. It’s not easy and at times we are left feeling lonely and scared, but the one thing that Peekay never does is lose hope. He always maintains hope that he will become the welter-weight champion of the world. So the next time you feel like you can’t do something or are faced with an obstacle think about Peekay and how he always found a way to get what he needed.

Another prevalent theme in “The Power of One” is racism. It is discussed through out the book and becomes quite evident when Peekay meets Morrie, a Jewish boy. Morrie recounts to Peekay the discrimination and prejudices against the Jewish people. He explains the horrors of Hilter and how Jewish people were perceived and mistreated. Peekay is no stranger to racism himself. He witnessed racism through out his life. He saw it in how Geet Piel was treated, how the rest of the prisoners were treated, how the blacks were treated during his fights and when they tried to get educated. Doc explains it beautifully in a letter to Peekay. He says: “I do not think of myself as a German. What is a German? To say a man is a German, what is that? Does it tell you if he is a good man? Or a bad man? No, my friend, it tells you nothing about a man to say he is German. A man must think what he is inside. What he is on the outside, how can this matter?” (p. 188). Doc is right, it’s what the person does and who they are in the inside that matters. Borman’s character is a perfect example of Doc’s point. Borman may not have been black but he was a mean son-of-a-bitch. He beat up Geel Piet because he was black and left him to die. It wasn’t his skin color that made him evil, it was his spirit, his soul that did that. Sadly racism still exists, but my hope is that more people will look at who people are on the inside, rather than judge them on their skin color.

I would recommend this book to anyone. It is a phenomenal read that will leave you feeling inspired and uplifted.

May this blog inspire you to purchase “The Power of One” and to use Peekay as an example of someone who never gave up hope, never let being bullied define him.

Happy Thursday Everyone!!!!
