Letting go: learning to take care of yourself and the only chocolate chip cookie recipe you will ever need!!!!!

Shirt (R W & Co). Jeans (Gap). Shoes (Aldo).

This is what I wore today. This is a big deal for me, because I’ve literally been wearing pj’s and Lululemon since Monday. Today was the first day I put on makeup, did my hair and dressed up. So why the big deal?

It all started last Saturday when I woke up with some chest pain. It felt like I needed to crack my chest. The pain continued and worsened by Sunday morning. Stubbornly I went to work. The pain got worse through out the day. With much encouragement from my co-workers, I finally took some Ibuprophen (didn’t do anything). By the end of my 12 hr shift, I could barely move without feeling like an elephant was sitting on my chest. Thank goodness for my amazing and very persistent co-workers, I finally went down to the ER to get checked out. They were amazing. I had a chest x-ray, blood work drawn and an ECG done very quickly. My ECG showed that I had Pericarditis. Pericarditis is the inflammation of the sac that surrounds the heart. What causes it? A virus. My first question was how could a healthy 33 yr old, active, non smoking woman get it? The ER doctor said I could have caught it from a virus my son had. He happened to be sick on Saturday. It could also be related to the hand and foot disease that kids get.

The good news is that I didn’t need any antibiotics, didn’t need to be admitted, and that according to the doctor, 95 % of these cases are benign. I was totally terrified when he first told me, and to be quite honest, I’m still worried that this infection might cause some damage to my heart. I have a follow up doctor’s appt. tomorrow and an echo on Sunday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be okay, and that my heart has not been damaged. I have been told to rest, take my pain meds and let others take care of me. If you know me, staying still and letting others take care of me is very difficult. I don’t sit still EVER!!!! But for my health’ s sake and for my family, I am following doctor’s orders.

This blog was actually my husband’s idea. He knows how hard it is for me to sit around and let people take care of me. But I believe that this is God’s and the universe’s way of telling me to slow down. We get so caught up in this rat race, we forget to take time for ourselves. I know how I get so caught up in looking after everyone else that I forget to look after me. I think my biggest problem is taking time to slow down. I feel like I don’t have time to slow down because life is so busy and fast.So I am listening. I am trying to be a good patient. I have literally done nothing since Sunday but let people take care of me. I am catching up on my tv shows, reading and much needed sleep, I tire easily. I have the two best nurses anyone could ever ask. My son has been amazing through all of this. He understands that Mama’s chest is sore and that he has to take it easy on me. We still get our snuggle time with each other. It’s been good for my husband and him to spend more time together.

So here is what I’ve learned:

  • Pericarditis sucks. It hurts like hell. Its scary. It can happen to anyone, including someone healthy.
  • Although it is hard to do, the best thing to do is to let go. Let others help you. Give yourself a break.
  • The importance of slowing down, and taking time to breath and relax. I know that in the future, I will take more time for myself.
  • Go to the doctor and get checked out, don’t be stubborn!!!
  • Who your real friends are. Who are the people in your life who will step up to the plate and help you without having to be asked.

The lesson learned here is to slow down and enjoy your life, because you never know when life will take a crazy turn. In my case, I was very lucky and hopefully I won’t have any residual effects from the inflammation. The only thing I can do now is to have positive thinking, and imagine, as my husband described it to me, Lego men fighting off the dragons on my Pericardium. Each night, I imagine the Lego men fighting off the evil dragons and making me better. I know its corny but I’m willing to do anything to get myself better, plus it puts a smile on my face :)

I probably won’t post anything until next week. I am working on some great fashion ideas for my blogs once I’m better. I’m hoping my husband can go back to work on Monday. The doctor did mention that it could take between 2-8 weeks to fully recover. I kindly told him that I don’t have 8 weeks, so lets hope its only 2 :)

Below is my absolute favorite chocolate chip recipe. Its quick, easy and taste heavenly. My son loves, loves, loves to bake chocolate chip cookies with me. I can’t wait to bake some with him after I have healed.

  • 2 1/4 cups of flours
  • 1/2 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups of dark chocolate chips

Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 mins. They will be gooey when you take them out and stay gooey. I love soft, melt in your mouth chocolate chip cookies.

Below is a picture of my son and I baking chocolate chip cookies for the first time together a few months ago.

May this blog inspire you to slow down, take time for yourself, help someone in your life if they are going through something, and bake some chocolate chip cookies. I hope you enjoy the cookies as much as my family and I do.

Happy Thursday Everyone!!!!

Fall has arrived and make it a Greek night for dinner

Fall has arrived. I know its actually tomorrow, but it sure felt and looked like it today. Below is what I wore today. I was so excited to wear my boots :) !!!!

Jacket and Scarf (Jacob). Sweater, T-Shirt and Jeans (Gap). Boots (Fergalicious c/o Sterling). Bracelets (Stella & Dot, Poshlocket). Watch (Guess).

A few months ago, I pinned this recipe from Pinterest (The Girl Who Ate Everything). I thought why not give it a try. You will not be disappointed. It’s a simple recipe for Chicken Gyros, but I make it into a Chicken Souvlaki. It’s delicious, quick and makes for great leftovers. I make it with roasted potatoes, tzatziki and Greek salad. Here is the recipe. Your family will love it and love you for it. Try it this weekend.

Chicken Souvlaki (I’ve altered the recipe slightly) (takes approximately 20 mins to prepare)

  • 2-4 chicken breasts
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 heaping tbsp of plain Greek yogurt
  • salt, pepper
  • 1 tbsp of dried Oregano
  • 1 tbsp of Greek seasoning from Epicure
  • 1 tbsp of Souvlaki seasoning from Epicure

Cut the chicken up into cubes. Mix the above ingredients together. Pour over chicken, stir and refrigerate for at least 1 hr. Then place chicken on skewers and either bbq it or bake it at 350 degrees for 45-50 mins.

Roasted Potatoes (takes about 15 mins to prepare)

  • cut potatoes into small pieces ( I use the nugget potatoes). Use as many as you need.
  • Add olive oil.
  • season with Season salt, pepper and Herbes Provencales (Epicure).
  • place potatoes in corning ware, add a bit of water. I roast it at the same time the chicken is cooking. At 350 degrees for 45-50 mins (depends on your oven).

Tzatziki (take 10 mins to prepare)

  • grate 1 cucumber with skin on
  • add 2-3 cloves of garlic
  • add salt
  • add 2-3 heaping large spoons of Greek yogurt.
  • make ahead of time and refrigerate for 2-3 hrs.

Greek Salade (takes about 10-15 mins to prepare)

  • slice up tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and red onions.
  • add olives ( I skip the olives, don’t like them)
  • add feta
  • mix together and add whatever salad dressing you like. You can make a simple one out of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, or we like to use Renee’s Peppercorn Dressing.

Below is a picture of this fantastic meal. I know the picture doesn’t do it justice, but take my word for it. It’s amazing.

I’m hoping to feature my favorite recipes every week. I know that we get into a “what to make for dinner?” rut.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!! :) If you try this recipe let me know how it turns out.

Self-Image: How you see yourself and different ways of wearing a simple white t-shirt

Skirt (Old Navy). Cardigan and Tank Top (Jacob). Shoes (Aldo). Necklace (Banana Republic). Bracelets (Poshlocket). Watch (Michael Kors).

If you think you are seeing double, you are not, yes I have worn this outfit before. I couldn’t resist wearing it one last time before Fall sets in. The yellow reminds me of the Natasha Bedingfield song “Pocket Full of Sunshine”. Whenever I wear this cardigan it makes me think of Summer and glorious sunshine.

A few weeks ago I read a blog about self image and how we see ourselves. Then on another blog I read something similar. It got me thinking about how I see myself, and sometimes its not very good. I think the biggest problem is media, magazines and celebrities. It’s really hard to accept yourself for who you are when you are constantly inundated with magazine articles telling you how to change the shape of your nose with some contouring, or how to look younger, or different plastic surgeries. When you see celebrities getting boob jobs, plastic surgery left, right and center and you see how skinny/gaunt/anorexic they look, its hard not to want to change something about yourself. I mean if a celebrity doesn’t feel good about themselves, then what chance do we simple folk have??? We are exposed to so many images that tell us we are not good enough the way we are. It’s no wonder teenage girls develop an eating disorder, have body dysmorphic disorder, and don’t value their bodies.

I know I am just as guilty of having poor self-esteem and not feeling good about myself as many other women out there. It’s hard not to, especially when that’s what society is telling us. Reading these blogs made me not only think about how I see myself, but how I want my son to see himself. I don’t want him to look in the mirror and see his flaws. I want him to look in the mirror and love the freckle on his lip, or the color of his eyes and hair. I want him to love himself for who we created him to be. God made us the way he did and we should embrace the way we look. The world would be very boring if everyone looked the same. Beauty comes in many shapes and forms, and it’s not what’s on the outside that counts.

I want to start embracing the way I look, because my husband loves me the way I am. He doesn’t want a blonde bombshell with fake boobs. He loves this brunette, boyish framed woman. I want my son to see that I love who I am, and the way that I look, and most importantly that I accept myself for who I am. I want to start taking compliments better, because lets face it ladies, we aren’t all that good at taking them. We are really good at deflecting them or at making self-deprecating comments.

So how do we go about changing the way we see ourselves??? I think the first thing is to stop looking at these airbrushed magazines thinking that this is the ideal woman. We need to look at these magazines and realize that these women have stylists, and makeup artists, and spend hours and hours in the chair to look like that. Jennifer Aniston once said in an interview that even she doesn’t look like that. She has a team of people who make her up. The next thing is to stop being so hard on ourselves. No one has the perfect body, not even Jennifer Aniston. I’m sure we could find some cellulite on her :). My point is that we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and see the beauty looking back at us, not what we don’t like. I love how on “What Not to Wear”, Carmindy, always asks the person what they like about themselves? She highlights the person’s best features. She gets them to see themselves for who they really are; to see the beauty that is within them. Another important thing is to do things to restore your confidence in yourself. Whether that’s getting back to the gym, getting your nails/hair done, or buying something that makes you feel pretty. I know I feel much better about myself when I’ve had a bit of pampering. Also buying something that makes you feel pretty does wonders for your self-confidence. When was the last time you bought yourself something that made you feel pretty? The last thing is to surround yourself with people who bring you up, not bring you down. You need people in your life that see you for who you are, the “real” you and want to be around the “real” you. These people will bring out the best in you, and make you be the best person you can be.

Ask yourself a few questions:

I am beautiful because…

I am strong because…

I feel best about myself when…

I love being me because…

I wish that I could give myself permission to…

I always feel comfortable in my own skin when…

The lesson I have learned about my body image this year is…

I took these questions from Simply Sarah’s blog

Take the time and answer these questions. It’s a lot harder than you think, and you’ll be amazed at your answers. Write it down, and on “those” days when you feel like crap about yourself, take it out, read it, and remind yourself why you are beautiful.

My fashion tip for this blog is simple, get yourself a simple white t-shirt. I know I’ve talked endlessly about my love for Gap’s Pure Body white t-shirt, but there is a reason. A white t-shirt is so incredibly versatile and can carry you from season to season. Below are some different ways to wear a white t-shirt. It’s all about how you accessorize it.

Pair the white t-shirt with red crop pants and accessorize it with a great statement necklace.

T-Shirt (Gap). Pants (Gap). Necklace (Etsy). Shoes (Aldo). Watch (Michael Kors). Bracelets (Stella & Dot).

For the fall add a jean skirt, tights, boots and a warm sweater.

T-shirt and Jean Skirt (Gap). Sweater and Tights (Jacob). Boots (Browns). Necklace (Etsy).

Add a cardigan, great necklace, belt, skinny black pant and flats. A great casual look.

Cardigan, T-Shirt and Pants(Gap). Belt (Jacob). Necklace (Banana Republic). Shoes (Aldo).

For a great weekend outfit, pair it with trouser jeans, cardigan and nude ballet flats.

T-Shirt and Jeans (Gap). Cardigan (H & M). Flats (Aldo). Necklace (Banana Republic).

It’s a great layering piece under a light weight sweater, some skinny jeans and boots.

T-Shirt and Jeans (Gap). Turtleneck (J. Crew). Boots (Browns).

Dress it up with a skinny jean, boyfriend blazer, a great statement necklace and some sexy heels.

T-Shirt (Gap). Jeans and Blazer (R W & Co). Heels (Aldo). Necklace (Stella & Dot).

So ladies get yourselves a great white t-shirt and see all the different ways you can wear it. One word of advice: get a few of the same t-shirt that way if you stain it, you have a couple more.

May this blog inspire you to examine how you see yourself, to accept and love yourself for who you are, to stop comparing yourself to celebrities and to get yourself a great white t-shirt and put together an outfit that makes you feel pretty!!!! :)

Happy Thursday Everyone!!!

What inspires me and how to wear the “it” pant for Fall

Cardigan (Gap). Leggings (Jacob). Jersey dress ( H & M). Necklace (Stella and Dot). Bracelets (Stella and Dot, Poshlocket). Watch (Michael Kors). Shoes (Aldo).

This is what I wore yesterday (I’m thinking of belting the dress next time I wear it). If you are aware of the hot spell we are experiencing, then you would think I’m crazy for wearing all black and a long sleeve cardigan. I didn’t realize how warm it was going to be. Let’s just say I smartened up today and am hoping to wear my summer clothes for as long as possible.

After writing my last blog, I got to thinking about what/who inspires me? When I think about it, I have some amazing people in my life, who keep me grounded and help keep my life in perspective. After my husband lost his job in February, it was hard to not to feel “poor me” or “poor us”. We gave ourselves a few minutes to have a pity party, and then realized how blessed and fortunate we were to have each other, our son, our home, our health and our friends. Below are some things/people who inspire me every day.

1. My son, inspires me every day to be a better person, mother and wife. These past two weeks have been full of changes for him and he rose to each and every challenge. He inspires me to live in the moment and to enjoy the little things in life. His laughter and smile encourage me to laugh and smile more, and to be more silly.

2. My husband never gave up when he lost his job. He kept at it until he found a new one. He teaches our son to live with integrity and that when life throws you curve ball, you rise above it and make the most of it.

3. Single mothers inspire me every day. I know that no matter what, at the end of the day, I have my husband to help me out. On the days where he has to work late, I think about single moms and how they have to do it every day, by themselves. Being a parent is a thankless and grueling job, which is made even more difficult when you don’t have someone to help you. So my hat goes off to you single moms who do it and do it well.

4. Parent’s of sick children and sick children. One of my dearest friend’s daughter was diagnosed with Cancer 2.5 yrs ago. Thankfully, she is now finished her treatment and is a healthy 4 yr old, but when I think about what my friend went through emotionally, it breaks my heart. I can’t even begin to fathom it. My son was born with Bilateral Club Feet and that was hard enough to deal with, and we knew that with proper treatment he would have no problems walking. My friend had no guarantees that after all the treatment, her daughter would be cured. To all those parent’s of sick children and to the sick children themselves, God bless you and your families. You truly are not only an inspiration but heroes.

5. People who help others. It can be anyone, any profession, helping someone in any way they can. I wish this world was full of more kindness, selflessness and more paying it forward; giving back to others.

6. People who follow their Personal Legend. If you read my previous blog, it discussed following your heart and doing what makes you happy. I love reading about people who are happy in their lives by following what makes them happy and fulfilled.

7. People who aren’t raised under ideal circumstances but manage to make a life for themselves. People with determination to become something, to do something with their lives. People who overcome adversity and obstacles and rise above the challenges in life.

8. Writers of good books inspire me. They make it so that anything is possible, even flying and magic as in Harry Potter. I love how J. K. Rowling captured our imaginations with a world of magic and mystery.

9. My friends inspire me to be me, to follow my dreams, to make sense of life. They make me laugh and they support me.

What inspires you? Who inspires you? We all have people and things/events in our lives that we draw inspiration from. Where do you find your inspiration?

My fashion tip for this blog is to get your hands on the “it” pant for Fall. So what is the “it” pant? The “it” pant is a Bordeaux/purple/red/burgundy/wine colored skinny pant/jean. Bordeaux is the new color trend for Fall. You can find it in any store, from H & M to J Crew. I really like it because it’s not your ordinary jean, the color is great for Fall and Winter and is really versatile. Below are some looks with the “it” pant.

A great casual look, pair it with a striped long sleeve shirt and ankle booties.

Striped shirt (Gap). Pants (R W and Co.) Necklace (Etsy). Booties (Fergalicious c/o Sterling Shoes)

This next look I copied from Pinterest.

Sweater (Jacob). White Oxford Shirt (Jacob). Pants (R W and Co). Shoes (Aldo).

Again my version, is not as glamorous. To put things into perspective, I took these pictures after taking my son to gymnastics, making dinner, and cleaning up the house.

This next look is a dressier one. I paired the pants with a white blouse, boyfriend blazer and nude heels.

Pant (R W and Co). Blouse (Jacob). Blazer (R W and Co). Heels (Aldo). Necklace (Banana Republic). Bracelet (Etsy). Watch (Michael Kors).

I thought for the fun of it, I would pair these pants with a bow blouse and heels.

Top (Jacob). Pants (R W and Co). Shoes (Aldo). Watch (Michael Kors). Bracelet (Etsy).

These pants are great for Fall/Winter. I’m looking forward to wearing them with a sweater and riding boot.

Weekly deals:

  • R W and Co: buy one get one 50% off.
  • Jacob: jeans, sweater and cardigans on sale, in store and on-line.
  • Gap: up to 40% sale on selected items, both on-line and in store.

May this blog inspire you to figure out who/what inspires you, and to find yourself a great pair of Bordeaux pants for Fall/Winter.

Happy Tuesday Everyone!!!!

What I know for sure and how to wear your favorite Summer clothes during Fall

Cardigan and shirt (Gap). Scarf (Old). Leggings (Jacob). Toms (Toms). Watch (Michael Kors). Bracelets (Poshlocket, Poshlocket).

This is what I wore today to drop my son off for his first day of 2.5 hrs of Preschool without Mama. He did amazing. I left while the teacher was reading him a story and he never even looked back. I shed, yet again, a few tears and then realized that I have 2 hrs to myself. I spent that time cleaning the house and running errands, but it was so nice to have some time to myself. His preschool has a webcam, so I did check in, and found that he was doing fine. When I went to pick him up, he was all smiles and having the time of his life playing on the playground. I am emotionally exhausted. Everyday thus far has been something new for him, which required “no parental participation”. I’m relieved that it was more stressful for me than for him. I’m looking forward to enjoying some cocktails this Saturday. This Mama sure needs it.

About a month ago, a friend of mine interviewed me for an on-line mom’s site. It hasn’t come out yet, but I’ll post the article and link once its out. In the article, my friend asked me: “What do I know for sure?” What a thought provoking question!!!! I’ve never thought about what I know for sure. Have you? It’s a short list, let me tell you. Since her interview I realized that I know a few more things for sure. Here they are:

1. I believe in love and in finding your soul mate.

2. Life is too short, so you need to enjoy it ( I need to follow this more!!! :)).

3. Relationships are hard, especially a marriage, and you need to constantly foster it and work at it.

4. Playing with my son and watching him grow is the best thing in the world.

5. I don’t know everything. I’m constantly learning new things. My son is the best teacher.

6. We need more love in this world.

7. We need to let our kids go, to flourish and develop into their own person. I learned this, this week, watching my son participate in activities all by himself.

8. My son’s smile and laugh makes my soul sing. :)

9. Being a parent is the hardest yet most rewarding job in the world.

10. Potty training is a bitch!!!!

11. You can read as many books as you want about parenting, sleep training and potty training, but your child will do it, in their own good time. NO you are not a bad parent if your child isn’t exactly textbook. I learned this the hard way. I read every parenting book, potty training and sleep training book and it was for nothing, because when Aiden was ready to do those things, then he did it. He is stubborn and he does things in his own good time. I had to get over the “I’m a bad mother” because he won’t sleep through the night or isn’t potty trained yet. The books are great guides, but they sure know how to make you feel like crap. So moms and dads out there, read everything with a grain of salt and just do your best!!!! In the end that’s all we can do.

I know that one of my biggest fashion dilemmas come with the change of seasons. I have my favorite clothing items that I have to sadly pack away until the following year. I decided that this year I’m going to keep wearing my favorite Summer pieces during Fall and hopefully Winter. So here are some ways of wearing your favorite summer items during Fall.

I love my jean skirt and how versatile it is. So put on a pair of leggings or tights, add a cardigan, pair it with some boots and you have yourself a Fall outfit.

Cardigan (Jacob). T-Shirt (Gap). Jean Skirt (Gap). Necklace (Etsy). Tights (Jacob). Boots (Browns). Bracelets (Poshlocket, Poshlocket). Watch (Michael Kors).

Another way of wearing a jean skirt is pairing it with a great sweater and ankle boots.

Sweater (Gap). Jean Skirt (Gap). Tights (Jacob). Boots (Fergalicious c/o Sterling). Necklace (Banana Republic). Bracelets (Poshlocket, Poshlocket). Watch (Michael Kors).

My next favorite Summer piece is a red skirt. Put it with a turtleneck and some boots and you are ready to go. After I took the picture, I realized that adding a skinny belt would be a great touch.

Skirt (Gap). Turtleneck (R W & Co.). Tights (Jacob). Boots (Browns).

Add a sweater, jean jacket and ankle booties for a more casual look.

Jean Jacket and Skirt (Gap). Sweater (Old Navy). Necklace (Banana Republic). Bracelets (Poshlocket, Poshlocket). Boots (Fergalicious c/o Sterling).

Take your favorite crop pant, add a sweater, a flat and a jean jacket.

Sweater (Jacob). Crop Pants (Jacob). Flats (Aldo). Jean Jacket (Gap). Necklace (Stella and Dot). Bracelets (Stella and Dot, Stella and Dot).

Add a polka dot sleeveless blouse, white boyfriend blazer and black patent heels and you are ready for a night on the town.

Blouse (Jacob). Jacket (R W and Co). Pants (Jacob). Heels (Aldo).

I “pinned” this next look from Pinterest. Take black shorts, add some tights, ankle booties, white t-shirt and blazer. The first look is what I pinned and underneath is my interpretation.

So I’m not as glamorous looking as the model, but hey did she get up at 6am and run after a 3 yr old all day??? :) So I’m not as glamorous looking as the model, but hey did she get up at 6am and run after a 3 yr old all day???

I also “pinned” this next look from Pinterest. I love my red crop pants and here are a few ways of wearing them during Fall. This first one is inspired by Eva Longoria.

Pants and shirt (Gap). Scarf (old). Flats (Aldo).

I admit I’m no Eva Longoria, but I still think the outfit is cute.

This next look is also with the red crop pant and I’ve paired it with a jean jacket, sweater and white button top.

Jacket and Pant (Gap). White Oxford Shirt (Jacob). Flats (Aldo).

I absolutely love my cropped jeans, so here are a couple different ways of wearing them during Fall.

The first look I “pinned” again from Pinterest.

Sweater (Old Navy). Jeans (R W and Co). White Oxfort Shirt (Jacob). Heels (Aldo). Necklace (Banana Republic).

Add a white tank top, pink boyfriend cardigan, belt and ballet flats.

Cardigan (Gap). Tank Top and Jeans (R W and Co). Belt (Jacob). Flats (Aldo). Necklace (Banana Republic).

May this blog inspire you to figure out what you know for sure and to look in your wardrobe and see what can translate into the Fall. I’m sure you have more then you realize.

Next week I’m hoping to start featuring some of my favorite recipes, some of my cupcake and cake creations and add any deals I come across, whether it be fashion related or food related.

Happy Thursday Everyone!! :)

Happy Thursday Everyone!! :)

The Alchemist: your Personal Legend and Fall shoes that should be in your closet

Cardigan (Gap). Jeans (Gap). T-shirt (Gap). Flats (Aldo). Scarf (Old). Watch (Michael Kors). Bracelet (Etsy).

I wore this outfit for my son’s second day of preschool. Today after I got him settled, I left for 40 mins. It was a big deal for both Aiden and I, but we did amazing, especially Aiden. He didn’t even shed a tear, unlike Mama, although I didn’t cry as much as I thought I would. Thursday will be the big test as it will be 2.5 hrs without Mama. If today is any indication of how Thursday will be, then it will be a good day. I’m keeping my fingers crossed :).

In the past, I have not been a huge fan of the color pink, but I admit that the older I get, the more I am starting to like it, and wear it. So don’t ever rule any color from of your wardrobe.

I’m trying to belt more of my outfits and I was hoping to wear this one today, but I needed to add a few more holes to it. Below are pictures of me with/without the belt. Let me know what you think? Belt or no belt?

And yes my hair is different. I got it cut yesterday and my hair dresser flat ironed it for me. I used to do it everyday, but with Aiden I don’t have time. Its a nice treat to have it straightened.

Recently for my book club, we read “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. This was my second time reading the book and then yesterday I read it again. I’ll start by giving a quick synopsis of the book, and then explain why I find this book to be so profound.

The book begins with the main character, Santiago, who is a shepherd, looking to find the Merchant so he can sell him some wool, and to see his daughter again. On the way to the Merchant, Santiago has a reoccurring dream of a child showing him that he will find treasure at the Egyptian Pyramids. Santiago is a firm believer in following his heart’s desire. Instead of becoming a priest as his parent’s wished, he wanted to travel and see the world, therefore with his parent’s support, he became a shepherd. On his way to the Merchant, he stops at a Gypsy who tells him that for 1/10 of his treasure she will tell him where he can find it. She tells him the treasure he is seeking can be found in Egypt. After his fortune telling experience, he meets the King of Salem who tells him about following your Personal Legend. He tells Santiago that his Personal Legend is to find his treasure at the Pyramids. After selling some of his sheep to the King of Salem, Santiago decides to seek out his Personal Legend. Through many obstacles and set backs, Santiago finds his treasure but most importantly finds love. Like the Alchemist said in the book, its not about changing copper into gold, its about the process. For Santiago the process of finding the treasure was his Personal Legend.

The reason why this book resonates so much with me is because I believe if we all followed our Personal Legend, we would be happier. In the Introduction, Paulo Coelho discusses our personal calling. He defines it as “whenever we do something that fills us with enthusiasm, we are following our legend” (p. vi). (Please forgive me for my referencing, I am a bit out of practice). He continues to explain why we don’t all follow our dreams and attributes it to overcoming four obstacles: 1. what we want to do is impossible; 2. love, that those who truly love us will support us; 3. fear of the challenges we will encounter; and 4. fear of realizing our dream (p. viii-viiii). I know that at times when I have expressed an interest in trying something new, some people in my life have automatically said “its too hard”, “that I shouldn’t try”. Think about it for one second, I’m sure we can all relate to the four obstacles Paulo is referring to. I believe that many times we don’t follow our passion for fear of failing. The Alchemist tells Santiago “that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself” (p. 130). We psych ourselves out and convince ourselves that its too hard, when all we need to do is realize that if we are truly following our dream “all the universe conspires to help that person realize his dream” (p. 114).

I know this to be true because when I was in my third year of Sciences, I wasn’t happy, and realized that I needed to change from my general Science degree. At the time I was working in a physio clinic. It got me thinking about how I like working with people. I didn’t want to be a physiotherapist, but I did want to do something that involved working/helping people. Unbeknownst to me, I applied to the Faculty of Nursing the day before the deadline. I was one of the last people accepted into the program. I truly believe that it was meant to be. I love helping people. I find no greater satisfaction then helping others, whether its through nursing, or making cupcakes for an inner city school, or donating food and clothes to the less fortunate.

Paulo Coelho does an amazing job of taking this wonderful story of Santiago and personalizing it. You can relate to his yearning to find the Merchant’s daughter and then again when he meets Fatima. I love how “innocently” Paulo describes their first encounter: “What the boy felt at that moment was that he was in the presence of the only woman in his life, and that, with no words, she recognized the same thing” (p. 93). I love how pure their meeting was, and how they knew they were each others soul mate. It made me melt just thinking about it, and reminded me of how I felt when I first met my husband. Fatima understood that Santiago had to continue on to find his treasure, and only then would he be free to be hers. She supported him, and I believe that more people would pursue their passion if they had the support of their partner.

This is an allegory of life, of how we all should be living our lives. I understand that for many the reality of pursuing their dream is difficult or almost impossible. Many people dream of becoming a singer or actor, but they can’t quite their day job because they need to support their family. I completely and totally understand that. I feel like there can be a happy medium, and I also believe in what Paulo said, about how if you want something, the universe will conspire to ensure to you get it. I know it’s not easy and I struggle with that each and every day. I think about what my Personal Legend is all the time. I believe that I am following it, maybe not as much as I would like, but its a work in progress. I also feel fulfilled and content when I am following my heart.

I believe this book should be a must read for kids in junior high and high school. Paulo makes Santiago’s character very relatable, and almost child-like, which is why I feel like many people not just adults, can relate to the story. As young adults, we constantly struggle with what to do, as does Santiago. I know that when my son gets old enough I will be giving him this book. It may not resonate with him just then but someday I’m hoping it will. When he finds himself discouraged and confused I hope he reflects on “The Alchemist” and draws inspiration from Santiago. What I want more then anything is for my son to follow his heart, his passion.

From “The Alchemist” to Fall must have shoes. My fashion tip for this blog is to go out and get yourself some great shoes for Fall. Here are my picks:

1. Booties, yes I keep posting them but they are amazing and incredibly versatile.

2. A great pair of high heeled boots (Aldo)3. Riding boots

4. High heel Booties for a night out on the town

5. Patent shoes: nude or black or both :)

6. Great flats

7. Rain boots: a must living in the lower Mainland. I love mine:) They were a much needed Christmas present.

8. Wedges

9. Great pair of Uggs or a cheaper version (Old Navy) :)

May this blog inspire you to read “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, to follow your Personal Legend and to embrace Fall with a great pair of shoes and/boots.
