Weekly/Monthly Fashion Recap, Boyfriend Jeans & A Conversation With My 2 Year Old

This is what I am wearing today: a white oxford button shirt, boyfriend jeans, Toms and my tote. We are headed for a play date today in the park, as long as the weather cooperates. I thought this outfit is perfect to chase a 4 year old around in, in the park. Plus the shoes are super comfortable.

A Little Of This & A Little Of That…

A few days ago, I was watching the morning news and I came across this hilarious video that a dad made here in Vancouver of a real conversation he had with his 2 year old daughter. In the video instead of his daughter, a grown man plays her and it’s absolutely hilarious. It’s about a husband trying to talk to his wife and his 2 year old not letting him. Any parent out there can completely relate. Last night was a perfect example of just how much my husband and I can relate. We were trying to have a discussion during dinner and every second Aidens like “Mama, Papa”. He forgets that I’m not only his Mama, but my husband’s wife, that I existed before he came along. This video describes being a parent right down to a tee. Here it is. Enjoy :)

About a month ago, I ordered this fabulous bracelet from Gigglosophy on Etsy.

Pave Link Bracelet

Unfortunately when it arrived, it arrived in pieces. I contacted Tanya and she immediately apologized and offered to fix it. She not only fixed it but sent me this pink link bracelet as well. Gotta say that I’m really impressed with Tanya’s customer service.

Pink Link Bracelet

I wore the pave link one on Thursday and the pink one I’m wearing today. I love them. So versatile and pretty.

Cobalt & Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up

This is what I am wearing today: a grey sweater, cobalt blazer, trouser jeans, metallic flats and my favorite tote. I love this grey sweater and I don’t wear it nearly enough because it’s such a drab colour. I recently purchased this fabulous cobalt blazer and thought it would be a great way to add some colour to the grey sweater. If you’re finding that your outfits are a bit dull or drab, try adding some colour with a fabulous blazer, cardigan, scarf, purse or even a colourful statement necklace. Just by adding something colourful to your outfit, you’ve given it a new life.

Take yesterday’s outfit for example a black cardigan, white t-shirt and skinny jeans. I added a red scarf and it completely changed the way I felt about the outfit. It went from a plain, normal outfit to a colourful one. Below is the outfit I wore.

So if you’re finding yourself in a bit of a lack of colour in your outfits rut, try adding some colour with a scarf, purse, jacket, cardigan or statement necklace.

Ok, now it’s your turn to link up your fabulous outfits :

Hair, A Rainy Field Trip (Burnaby Village Museum) and Sunflower Cupcakes

This is what I am wearing today: my skinny jeans, nude bow ballet flats, black cardigan, a white t-shirt accessorized with a red scarf and a fabulous tote. Since I pretty much looked like a wet rat after my son’s preschool field trip, I decided to show you my outfit via Polyvore.

J Brand Jeans

Let’s just say that yesterday was gong show. It pretty much pissed rain the entire field trip. The teachers got the time wrong and we were an hour early. Imagine trying to entertain 20 4-5 year olds!!! Thankfully we were able to start a bit earlier. My son was a super star and so were the rest of the kids. I am so impressed at how patient they were. I have to thank 3 of the moms that I know that were my sanity’s saving grace. We all went around together which made it way more fun and tolerable. Next time I’m bringing Bailey’s in a thermos!!!! :) I just don’t understand how people can be so disorganized (my son’s preschool teachers and the people running the Burnaby Village Museum). Thank God for the other moms who really made this wet field trip fun. Below are pictures of our wet escapade.

If you haven’t been to Burnaby Village Museum you should definitely check it out and take your kids when it’s not pissing rain. Although the rain sucked and it was disorganized, we did have a lot of fun. Plus you can get some ice cream as a treat at the end of it all. That’s what we did. A coffee for the moms and ice cream for the kids. Everyone left happy. Thanks again Lyn, Bonnie and Audrey for making this field trip bearable and fun.

Many of you have asked me how I style my hair. The long and short of it is that I don’t have to do anything but wash and wear. Now here’s the back story: before I had my son, I had an ugly wave in my hair, so I flat ironed it. After having my son, I accidentally discovered that my hair had become curly. I’ve heard of it happening to other people and that’s exactly what happened to me. I’ve always wanted curly hair, so I’m quite happy. All I do is wash my hair, dry it a bit in a towel and then using my hands crimp up my hair, let it dry a bit and then put some hairspray in it and let it dry. That’s it. Somedays it looks better than others, but that’s basically it. It sure makes styling my hair in the mornings easy.

Curly Hair

Last but not least, after putting my son down for a nap and putting this post together, I decorated birthday cupcakes for an inner city school I volunteer at. Almost 2 years ago, I started making monthly cupcakes for the kids birthdays. These kids come from very poor homes where they sometimes don’t even have warm clothes for Winter. Every kid deserves to have their birthday celebrated and this is my way of giving back. So each month, I make different themed cupcakes. For both May and June, I decided to make sunflower cupcakes. Here they are:

Happy Hump Day Everyone!!!!

Olive, Stripes & Hunter Boots

I have a busy day ahead of me. It’s my son’s preschool Spring field trip today. Let’s hope the rain stays away. I have to finish decorating birthday cupcakes for an inner city school I volunteer at, make dinner, drop off the cupcakes, head to bootcamp, rush home to change, eat dinner and then head out to my book club. I have to say I’m already looking forward to bed tonight.

This is what I am wearing today: my Hunter Boots (as the weather is very ominous), my olive skinny pants, a striped sweater, and my jean jacket. I wore this outfit to work this weekend and thought it would be perfect for my son’s outdoor field trip. The outfit is warm and comfortable and my Hunter Boots are perfect for it. I had to stop taking pictures as it started to rain.

Stripes, Denim Jacket & How To Make Your Own Grab Button

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I worked all weekend, so today is really my weekend. Ok, well no day is really my weekend, because when you’re a mom, everyday is work day. But work that I love and cherish.

Thank you to everyone who linked up on Thursday. I forgot to mention that the link up starts each Wednesday at midnight PST and ends the following Sunday at midnight PST. I hope to get even more fabulous posts next week.

I also wanted to thank you guys again for all your great comments. You are the reason why I keep blogging. I appreciate that you appreciate what I write and the work that goes into each and every post. I do put my heart and soul into each of them and spend many hours planning my posts. So thank you for all your support.

This is what I am wearing today: a striped jersey dress, leggings, Hunter boots and my jean jacket. It’s rain yet again. I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow, my son has his end of the year Preschool field trip tomorrow. God, I can’t wait for Summer to arrive. I decided to show this look with 2 different shoes: my Hunter Boots and my flats. When this picture was taken, on Friday, the sun was shining. But they do say rain for Monday.

Grab Button

So what’s “Grab Button” you ask? If you look above, you can see the name of my blog and some code underneath it. That’s what a grab button is. It’s the graphic and then the code underneath. The purpose of it is so that others can take it and place it in their blogs or you can send it to people to advertise your blog.

Why am I sharing this? I’m sharing this because a few weeks back I was struggling with how to do one and I searched and found some great free tutorials. Although they were helpful, I found some errors in the code. Thank God my husband is a Computer Programmer. I thought it would be nice to share it with you guys to make it easier for you to do it yourself. It’s actually quite easy, once you have the proper code.

To start you need 2 pieces of information:

1. You need the exact email address of your blog: ie mine is “http://vodkainfusedlemonade.com”.

2. You need the code of your graphic. To find that, it’s quite easy. If you’re using WordPress go to

  • Media and then click Library.

How To Find Media

  • Find the picture you are looking for. If you haven’t already added it to your library add it now
  • Then once you’ve either found the picture or added it, click on Edit.

Edit

  • Under the Save portion on the right hand side of the screen, you will see File URL. Copy that. That is what you need. That is what you need to put into the code.

File/Picture URL

3. Those are the only 2 pieces of information you need.

4. Under Appearances, find Widgets. Below is what the screen looks like once you have opened Widgets.

How To Find Widgets

Widgets

5. Under Widgets find Text.

Text

6. Drag text to the right side and place it somewhere under Main Sidebar.

Where to put text box

7. Give the Text a title. I named mine “GRAB A BUTTON”. Quite easy.

Text

8. Now you are going to need a code: Grab Button Code

  • Add the exact link of your blog where it says “the exact link to your blog”.
  • Add the title of your blog where it says “Title of your blog”.
  • Add your blog link minus the “http” where it says “your blog link”.
  • Add the url of the picture you are using to where it says “the url of the picture you are using”.

In this code I have preformatted it to 250 x 100. You can change that where it says “width” and “height”. Play around with it, until you get it to the correct size you want.

9. Once you’re done, click save and then check and see if it’s correct.

Once you have the code, it’s pretty easy to create your own “GRAB BUTTON”. I hope this helps make this easier and less confusing. Good luck and please let me know if you have any questions.

I will post the winner of the Stella & Dot earrings in tomorrow’s post.

May this blog inspire you to create your own “Grab Button” and to pair a jean jacket with a dress for a great Spring casual look.

I would love it if you followed me on Facebook, Bloglovin or Pinterest.

The White Tee, Review of Terry Fallis’ The High Road and The Power of Social Media

Today’s post will include a little of this and a little of that. So let’s start with what I am wearing today: boyfriend jeans, Tippi sweater, bow flats and a blazer. The weather really can’t make up it’s mind. I’m hoping for a nicer, sunnier June.

Outfit Recap

Today I’m linking up with Real Girl Glam for her Real Girl Style Challenge: The White Tee. I decided to pick 3 different ways I like to style a white tee. My favorite ways of styling a simple white tee is to add a statement necklace, cardigan or a vest. By adding any one of these you transform a simple white tee into something fabulous. Check out my favorite ways below…

The Power of Social Media

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown

I recently fell in love with a new show on CNN called Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown. I was not familiar with Anthony, but the commercial caught my eye. The idea of the show is that he travels all around the world, experiencing different food and cultures. It’s not your typical travel show. There are no false pretenses, no sugar coating the lives people live. It’s an honest, candid view of what life is like in certain parts of the world. So far Anthony has travelled to Koreatown in LA, Quebec, Libya, Morocco, Columbia and Myanmar.

What really made an impact for me was when I watched the episode where Anthony was in Libya. I remember the revolution that happened 2 years ago. I watched the news which showed how people fought for their freedom. Anthony asked a man about the revolution and how it came to be and the man answered “it came to be through social media like Facebook and Twitter”. To oversimplify it people communicated and organized the revolution through Facebook and Twitter. It’s absolutely amazing to think how 2 forms of social media that barely existed a decade ago, helped give people their freedom. It’s mind blowing. If you get a chance you can watch Parts Unknown on CNN Sunday nights at 9pm. It’s definitely worth watching.

Terry Fallis' The High Road

I recently finished Terry Fallis’ second novel called The High Road, which is the sequel to The Best Laid Plans. We read his first book in book club about a year ago and it pleasantly surprised me. I don’t care much for politics, especially Canadian as it’s as boring as watching paint dry, but Terry Fallis manages to captivate the reader through his main character Angus McLintock. Angus is a Scottish Engineer who accidentally gets involved in Canadian politics. I won’t go into any more detail as I don’t want to ruin the story. What I will say is from the first page, the humour engages you and compels you to keep reading.

The sequel is very much like the first one. From the first page I was laughing out loud. I only wish Canadian politics was this interesting. But on a more serious note, we recently held a Provincial Election here in BC and many people were disappointed with the outcome. For me personally, I didn’t want to vote (but I did!!!), as I felt like none of the candidates represented me, my family or my concerns. I felt like the campaigns were full of empty promises and grandiose propaganda. Once elected those officials, do whatever they want anyways. There is really no accountability. They say they are working for the people but they aren’t. They could take heed from Angus McLintock in Terry Fallis’ novels. Now this is a man who is true to his word, who doesn’t play the games, and doesn’t put up with bullshit. He says it like it is and in the end it benefits him. For once I would like to go to the polls feeling like one of the candidates represents me and my interests, instead of voting for the lesser of the evils. So if any Canadian politician reads this (highly doubtful, but one can hope), then please stop dicking around and start listening to us, the people. Stop playing games and start working for us the people. That’s what we are paying you for!!!!!

So back to the book, if you want a funny, quick, entertaining read then The High Road is perfect for you. It’s not just a book for Canadians, anyone can relate to the shenanigans of politicians. Start with the first, The Best Laid Plans and then read this one. You won’t be disappointed.

This is a picture of a flower bush in our backyard. It started to bloom this week. It’s so pretty. I love Spring.

R2D2 CAKE

This is the cake I made for my son for his 4th Birthday, at his request. I thought I would include a how-to on how I made this cake. I’ll be honest, making this cake was a labour of love for both my husband and I. It probably took us 24 hrs from the first sketch to the last star piped to make this cake, but it was so worth it. Check out my son’s reaction when he first saw the cake. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid more excited to see their birthday cake, than my son.

IMG_3191

R2D2 CAKE

Instructions on the making of R2D2

Supplies

  • 1- 8×11″ rectangle pan
  • 1- 11×17″ rectangle pan
  • 1 12″ in diameter circular pan
  • parchment paper
  • solid cake board
  • aluminum foil to cover the cake board
  • piping gel
  • blue, black and red food colour
  • paper
  • maker
  • cooling wracks
  • 4 decorating bags
  • 4 couplers
  • 3 #18 star decorating tips
  • 1 # 3 circular decorating tip
  • 2 batches of Martha Stewart’s Swiss Meringue Buttercream Icing

1. Before we could begin baking or decorating the cake, we had to make an R2D2 the size of our cake. Our cake was made out of 3 different cakes: 1- 8×11″ rectangle pan, 1- 11×17″ rectangle pan and 1- 12″ in diameter circular pan. The picture below is of the making of the drawing. Thank you to my amazing husband for this part!!! xoxo

R2D2 CAKE

This is what the cake is going to look like.

R2D2 CAKE

2. The next step was to bake the cakes. I made 3 batches of Martha Stewart’s Ultimate Chocolate cake. It really is the ultimate chocolate cake. It stays nice and moist for a long time.

3. My favorite icing is Martha Stewart’s Swiss Meringue Buttercream. It’s smooth, creamy, not too sweet and heavenly!!! :) I made a double batch. Once the icing is made, colour a very small amount grey, about 1 cup blue, another small amount red (you only need it for the eye. I used red fondant) and then colour a complete package of piping gel black.

4. Find yourself a very sturdy cake board base. We used an actual wood plank and covered it with aluminum foil.

5. Then we had to cut out the shapes to make R2 and then stick them together with icing. The best way to do that is to make a copy of your picture and cut that out and place it over the cake and then use that as a template to cut it out. Makes things much easier. That way you don’t have to worry about making the head (for instance) too big. That’s what happened to me and I ended up having to decorate R2′s face free hand.

R2D2 CAKE

6. Trace R2D2 onto parchment paper. Then cut out the head, body and legs.Turn the pieces around and use the side that you didn’t trace on, to re-trace R2 using the piping gel.

R2D2 CAKE

R2D2 CAKE

R2D2 CAKE

7. Place the newly traced piece with piping gel, gently and carefully onto the cake. Using a paint brush, retrace over the piping gel to ensure the gel gets securely placed on the cake. Then gently remove the parchment paper and voila R2′s head.

R2D2 CAKE

8. Now start piping in the icing. I started at the top of his head and proceeded down. Then I did his body and left his legs for the end. It took me about 2 hrs to ice him.

Final Product:

R2D2 CAKE

This cake fed about 45-50 people with plenty of leftovers left. I was paranoid we wouldn’t have enough cake, so I made sure to make a big one.

I wish you lots of luck in making this cake. It’s not that difficult but it takes a lot of blood, sweat and some tears (perhaps). It was definitely a labour of love.

Olive, The Great Gatsby & Tres Chic Thursday Fashion Link Up

I want to first off start by saying how my heart breaks for all those affected by Monday’s horrific tornadoes in Oklahoma. I remember the big Tornado, also known as “Black Friday”, that hit Edmonton in July of 1987. Although I was only 8 at the time, I remember losing power, hail the size of baseballs falling from the sky. Back then there was no social media and when the power went out, we had no idea what had happened. The devastation was horrific and Monday’s events reminded me of that tragedy. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

This is what I am wearing today: olive skinny pants, white t-shirt with a vest and some black flats. These pants are super comfy and are so incredibly soft!!!! I apologize for the indoor pictures, but it was pissing rain outside yesterday when I took them.

The Great Gatsby Movie

Last Thursday some girlfriends and I went to see Baz Luhrmann’s newest movie “The Great Gatsby”. I thought it was incredible. I’m not a big fan of Toby McGuire’s but he did a pretty good job as Nick Carraway. Leo is fabulous as Gatsby and Carey Mulligan was made for the role of Daisy Buchanan. I didn’t know it was a 3D movie and I’m not really a fan, but Baz did an incredible job of bringing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel to life. Baz is known for his over the top cinematography (Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet) and he did not disappoint in this movie. He literally brought the novel to life. The scenery was magnificent and opulent. Surprisingly, the movie was very true to the book. I found it to be a bit long at 2.5 hrs but overall it was very well done. I would definitely recommend this movie.

I’m so excited to announce my new weekly link up called Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday. Every Thursday I will have a link up where you can post your most amazing outfits, ideas and inspirations. I want to start off this post by thanking everyone for their sweet and thoughtful comments. You guys are the reason why I love putting my posts together, everyday!!!! I’m sorry if I sounded negative. Sometimes we all just need to vent and that’s what I needed to do on Friday. I promise that I won’t let the numbers get to me. I love doing this blog and I love all the great friends I’ve made and readers that follow me. You guys are truly the best.

Thanks ladies for giving my blog some love!!!! :)

Many of you guys responded to my question in Friday’s post: pictures taken inside or outside? You guys like outside pictures better. I will do my best to take pictures outside but when it rains it will have to be inside.

Onto today’s outfit. Since the weather here really can’t make up it’s mind, I thought wearing cropped jeans, a t-shirt, cardigan and metallic flats is the perfect outfit for running errands. Great mominform ladies!!!! Comfortable, casual yet fashionable :)

Strawberry Shortcake

I was checking out my weekly Thrifty’s flyer and they had Organic strawberries on sale. I thought since it’s the long weekend, I could make some Strawberry Shortcake. Instead of making it the regular way, I thought I would add my own flair to it.

1. Start by making the vanilla cake. I use Martha Stewart’s recipe for Vanilla Cupcakes and make it into a cake instead of cupcakes. So yummy :).

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups cake flour, not self-rising
  • 1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Spray your 8×11″ pan with non-stick spray. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine flours, sugar, baking powder, and salt; mix on low speed until combined. Add butter, mixing until just coated with flour.

2. In a large glass measuring cup, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla. With mixer on medium speed, add wet ingredients in 3 parts, scraping down sides of bowl before each addition; beat until ingredients are incorporated but do not overbeat.

3. Put the batter into a 8 x 11″ pan and bake between 40-50, until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.

4. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool for 10 mins, after which you remove from pan and allow to sit on wire rack until cool completely.

5. While the cake is cooling you can whip the cream. Place whipping cream into a mixer using the whisk attachment and whisk it until it forms the cream. I also add some vanilla sugar to make it a little sweeter.

Whipped Cream

6. Once the cake has cooled I cut it into small pieces 1-2″ pieces. This is how it differs from the traditional Strawberry Shortcake. Instead of making it all pretty and making different layers, I thought it would be fun to make it into do it your own Strawberry Shortcake. This way you can add as much or as little whipped cream, cake and strawberries as you want.

7. Cut up the strawberries.

All the ingredients you need : cake, whipped cream and strawberries.

Now it’s your turn, have fun with it by making it your own. Kids love this and it’s super yummy.

Different Ways of Styling a Maxi Skirt

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine asked me different ways of styling a Maxi skirt. Below are 2 different ways to wear a maxi skirt. The first look I added a chambray shirt, statement necklace and kept the shoes simple by adding a sandle, a great tote and some simple bracelets.

Maxi Skirt

Maxi Skirt (Gap). Chambray Top (Gap). Jewelry (Stella & Dot). Sandals (Gap). Purse (J Crew).

For the second look, I added a white t-shirt shirt, jean jacket and some colour with a red wedge, statement necklace and tote bag.

Maxi Skirt

Skirt (Gap). Jean Jacket (Old Navy). Toms (Aritzia). T-Shirt (J Crew). Statement Necklace & Bracelet (Stella & Dot). Tote (Stella & Dot).

The key to both looks is to make it your own by adding your favorite jean jacket, t-shirt, sandal, jewelry or purse. It’s about making it work for you. So if you are planning on buying a maxi skirt and wonder how to style it, check out your closet before you purchase a skirt. Then you can plan what colour and style of skirt to buy and you will know what you have at home to wear with it. The biggest mistake women make is buying a skirt or any item for that matter, and not thinking about what they have that will go with it. Plan ahead, know what you have in your closet and that will help you style the things you buy.
