Must Have Maxi Dresses & Last Anniversary Giveaway

I went to the NKOTB concert Wednesday night which made me absolutely exhausted yesterday, but I had the time of my life. I’ll post pictures next week, but I wanted to explain my tired and exhausted look in today’s pictures.

This is what I wore on Thursday, hence the sort of bag lady look. It was cold and I was exhausted. Nothing is more comforting then a warm, comfy cardigan and a scarf. The boys bought me this fabulous purple scarf when we were down in the States last weekend shopping.

Mom's Must Have Summer Items Series

In the third installment of Ada’s and my Mom’s Must Have Summer Items Series, you can see the first one here and the second one here, we are featuring the Maxi. I can’t say enough about the maxi. It’s the perfect dress that any woman, and I mean any woman, can wear. It’s versatile, light weight and hides those parts of our bodies that we feel we need to hide(you know what I’m talking about ladies). You throw on a jean jacket for a day look or add a gorgeous blazer for an evening look. Below are 2 different ways I styled 2 different Maxi dresses: one for daytime and the other for evening.

1. Playing in the park

Black & White Stripes, Fashion Recap, Ruby & Ink & Cup Of Tea

Yesterday was an exhausting day and night. My son picked up some very short lived bug that caused him to have a tummy ache and a fever. It came on as suddenly as it left, THANK GOD!!!! My poor little guy was absolutely miserable so much so that he asked to sleep in our bed. This kid never sleeps with us, so you know that he was sick. Another indication that something was amiss was that he didn’t want his weekly hot chocolate. We have a weekly hot chocolate/coffee date and he didn’t want it. We spent the day lying in bed watching movies. He slept with me in our bed, Wednesday night, and let me tell you it was exhausting. Imagine sleeping with a 4 year old who likes to spread every limb out as much as possible and who sleeps horizontally across the bed. Guess how much sleep this poor, tired, exhausted Mama got last night? The good news is that he was feeling much better in the morning and I was able to take him to preschool.

I’m excited to be meeting up with a good friend and her son today for a play date. We met through work and our boys are quite close in age. We had a play date last Summer and the boys hitted off well, which makes me happy. It’s nice to able to have play dates with moms that you know and like and that the kids get along, otherwise it’s kind of awkward. This is what I am wearing today: black and white striped short, a simple white tee, and white sandals. It’s absolutely gorgeous today and it’s supposed to stay that way all weekend. Thank God!!!!

Ruby & Ink

I recently stumbled across a fabulous little company called Ruby & Ink based out of Langley. The company is run by Lisa and Nicole, both mothers of three. Their earrings are whimsical, dainty, pretty and feminine. Their prices vary from $2.50 to $5.00/pair. I picked up my order yesterday and I love them. These would make a perfect gift for a little girl. Below are the pink rosettes I am wearing today.

Natalia Pardalis

I would like to introduce you to a local musician called Natalia Pardalis, who just released Cup of Tea from her second cd, which will hopefully be released in September. Here are my first impressions of the song Cup of Tea:

  • whimsical
  • has a good beat
  • love the piano accompaniment
  • the lyrics are sweet
  • nice tune
  • love the idea of meeting your true love
  • it’s a sweet song about finding love

Natalia Pardalis Who Is Natalia Pardalis? She describes herself as Fresh. Expressive. Unexpected.

Natalia’s mother once taught her, “No musical mistake is a mistake, but rather a journey to create beautiful music”. The singer, songwriter, pianist, and musical educator has emerged from the cocoon of the classical world to reach diverse audiences with her unique story and sound.

Taking inspiration from such distinctive artists as Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Nina Simone and a touch of Mozart, Natalia blends her most powerful influences to create a new fusion of sound and soul. She delivers a bold take on the familiar sounds of classical, jazz, the standards, and Greek folk music.

Her debut album Life, released to iTunes in December of 2011, is full of soul-tinged songs that are set to resonate with all who hear them. Produced by Juno award winning engineer, Rob Shallcross, the album contains a variety of sounds, instruments, and guest vocals. Anchored together by her incredible voice and impressive piano skills, Natalia takes the listeners on a personal exploration of her life throughout the past 10 years.

As well as graduating from several musical training programs in both performance and arts education, Natalia has just completed her Bachelor of Performing Arts degree (Capilano University, Douglas College, Langara College and Vancouver Community College) - the first of its kind in Canada. Natalia is now working on a Teacher’s ARCT diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Natalia’s vast performance experiences include Trinity Western University’s gigs with Vancouver Chamber Choir and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra which she lends experience and knowledge to aspiring artists. Having studied with the best of the best, Natalia’s teachers included Ron Moir, Ay Lang Wang, Chad Louwerse, Ingrid Suderman, jazz sensation Dee Daniels, and international opera singer Joseph Store.

Natalia is an award-winning composer. Last year, Natalia along with a group of friends won three awards (Critic’s Choice, People’s Choice, and Social Media Award) from the Greek American Foundation’s 24 hour Short Film Festival for their film O Tharraleos. To make deadlines, Natalia had to composed, performed and recorded the score in only 24 hours. As they say, “the rest is history.” http://youtu.be/jQoXiNpmN8k

In Spring 2013, Natalia was nominated for a Vancouver Island Music Award - BC Wide Artist of the Year. She is both honored and thankful for this recognition as an artist.

A Little Of This & A Little Of That…

A few days ago, I was watching the morning news and I came across this hilarious video that a dad made here in Vancouver of a real conversation he had with his 2 year old daughter. In the video instead of his daughter, a grown man plays her and it’s absolutely hilarious. It’s about a husband trying to talk to his wife and his 2 year old not letting him. Any parent out there can completely relate. Last night was a perfect example of just how much my husband and I can relate. We were trying to have a discussion during dinner and every second Aidens like “Mama, Papa”. He forgets that I’m not only his Mama, but my husband’s wife, that I existed before he came along. This video describes being a parent right down to a tee. Here it is. Enjoy :)

About a month ago, I ordered this fabulous bracelet from Gigglosophy on Etsy.

Unfortunately when it arrived, it arrived in pieces. I contacted Tanya and she immediately apologized and offered to fix it. She not only fixed it but sent me this pink link bracelet as well. Gotta say that I’m really impressed with Tanya’s customer service.

Today’s post will include a little of this and a little of that. So let’s start with what I am wearing today: boyfriend jeans, Tippi sweater, bow flats and a blazer. The weather really can’t make up it’s mind. I’m hoping for a nicer, sunnier June.

Today I’m linking up with Real Girl Glam for her Real Girl Style Challenge: The White Tee. I decided to pick 3 different ways I like to style a white tee. My favorite ways of styling a simple white tee is to add a statement necklace, cardigan or a vest. By adding any one of these you transform a simple white tee into something fabulous. Check out my favorite ways below…

The Power of Social Media

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown

I recently fell in love with a new show on CNN called Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown. I was not familiar with Anthony, but the commercial caught my eye. The idea of the show is that he travels all around the world, experiencing different food and cultures. It’s not your typical travel show. There are no false pretenses, no sugar coating the lives people live. It’s an honest, candid view of what life is like in certain parts of the world. So far Anthony has travelled to Koreatown in LA, Quebec, Libya, Morocco, Columbia and Myanmar.

What really made an impact for me was when I watched the episode where Anthony was in Libya. I remember the revolution that happened 2 years ago. I watched the news which showed how people fought for their freedom. Anthony asked a man about the revolution and how it came to be and the man answered “it came to be through social media like Facebook and Twitter”. To oversimplify it people communicated and organized the revolution through Facebook and Twitter. It’s absolutely amazing to think how 2 forms of social media that barely existed a decade ago, helped give people their freedom. It’s mind blowing. If you get a chance you can watch Parts Unknown on CNN Sunday nights at 9pm. It’s definitely worth watching.

Terry Fallis' The High Road

I recently finished Terry Fallis’ second novel called The High Road, which is the sequel to The Best Laid Plans. We read his first book in book club about a year ago and it pleasantly surprised me. I don’t care much for politics, especially Canadian as it’s as boring as watching paint dry, but Terry Fallis manages to captivate the reader through his main character Angus McLintock. Angus is a Scottish Engineer who accidentally gets involved in Canadian politics. I won’t go into any more detail as I don’t want to ruin the story. What I will say is from the first page, the humour engages you and compels you to keep reading.

The sequel is very much like the first one. From the first page I was laughing out loud. I only wish Canadian politics was this interesting. But on a more serious note, we recently held a Provincial Election here in BC and many people were disappointed with the outcome. For me personally, I didn’t want to vote (but I did!!!), as I felt like none of the candidates represented me, my family or my concerns. I felt like the campaigns were full of empty promises and grandiose propaganda. Once elected those officials, do whatever they want anyways. There is really no accountability. They say they are working for the people but they aren’t. They could take heed from Angus McLintock in Terry Fallis’ novels. Now this is a man who is true to his word, who doesn’t play the games, and doesn’t put up with bullshit. He says it like it is and in the end it benefits him. For once I would like to go to the polls feeling like one of the candidates represents me and my interests, instead of voting for the lesser of the evils. So if any Canadian politician reads this (highly doubtful, but one can hope), then please stop dicking around and start listening to us, the people. Stop playing games and start working for us the people. That’s what we are paying you for!!!!!

So back to the book, if you want a funny, quick, entertaining read then The High Road is perfect for you. It’s not just a book for Canadians, anyone can relate to the shenanigans of politicians. Start with the first, The Best Laid Plans and then read this one. You won’t be disappointed.

This is a picture of a flower bush in our backyard. It started to bloom this week. It’s so pretty. I love Spring.

I want to start of this post by thanking Ada from Elegance & Mommyhood for her shout out to me in her post yesterday. I really appreciate it. Thank you Ada for your beautiful write up and summary of my blog and of my fashion. Please check out her blog: Elegance & Mommyhood.

Outfit Recap

I’m experimenting with where to take my pictures. I have a small digital camera, nothing special and lighting is definitely an issue. Do you guys prefer pictures inside or outside?

Thoughts on this week’s events: A little of this and a little of that…

It’s been a busy and somewhat discouraging week. Although I’m happy with my blog and the fact that now I finally have a logo and buttons, I’m discouraged by the numbers. I know that I didn’t start this blog for numbers and it shouldn’t be about numbers, but lets be honest, it is about numbers!!! People are always asking me what my unique and monthly pageviews are. Last month, I felt like this blog was picking up momentum and this month, I feel like I am moving backwards. So yes I’m extremely discouraged. I’m a busy mom, that works on the weekends, makes cakes/cupcakes on the side and tries to spend some time with my husband. I put a lot of hard work and effort into it and it seems like it’s all in vain.

With that said, being negative and feeling sorry for myself won’t help my numbers and it certainly won’t encourage me to keep going. I’ve decided to fuck the numbers and continue to focus on quality. That’s what matters. I want to continue to focus on those that read my blog each and every day and leave me thoughtful and supportive comments. Nothing makes me happier then when I receive a comment that you bought a boyfriend jacket and you love it, or that you bought a pair of polka dot pants and you feel fabulous in it. At the end of the day that is what I want for my blog: for women to read it and be inspired to purchase things that make them feel pretty!!! :) So I promise that I will try and stay positive and please keep all the comments coming. I do read each and every one and I also do respond to them all. So thank you for all your support, I do really appreciate it. Thank you for listening.

On a more positive note my favorite moments with my son this week were when we made a bed downstairs on the area rug, brought pillows down, watched a movie, ate popcorn and then Aiden made a delicious spread of toy food for me. It was so much fun. The other great moment was when we pretended to sing opera, like a duet. It’s high and painful to listen to I’m sure, but boy did we have fun horsing around :).

I wanted to mention that, although I’m not the biggest fan of Angelina Jolie, I commend her for her bravery in coming out and sharing her story about her prophylactic double mastectomy. I’m glad that she has decided to come out and share her story so that women don’t feel so alone in their decision. I can’t begin to imagine how hard that must have been for Angelina and how hard it is for other women.

I wanted to share this quote from Will Smith. I thought it was quite fitting and true.

Will Smith Quote

Last but not least, I just remembered a few days ago that this weekend is the May long weekend. I thought it was next weekend. Anyways below is an outfit I put together for the long weekend. It’s perfect for a picnic, going to the park, or just hanging out at home.

  • put together a fabulous outfit for the long weekend
  • be silly with your kids and make a bed in your living room

Week Outfit Recap, My Impressions Of Target & What Being A Mom Means To Me

I wanted to thank everyone for their comments regarding my post about my bloggers conference. I’m really excited about the new design for my blog. Can’t wait to show it to you all. It’s almost ready!! :)

This is what I wore yesterday: my maxi dress, jean jacket, sandals and a statement necklace. I’ve been eagerly waiting months to start wearing my maxi dress. I was in Target yesterday and this woman came out of nowhere, told me that she loved my dress and proceeded to open my jean jacket to get a better look at my dress. I wasn’t sure what to do or say. She seemed harmless and really liked my dress. I took it as a compliment. Has that ever happened to anyone else?

This is what I am wearing today: my grey bermuda shorts, black simple top, my flower sandals and my jean jacket. This is definitely a staple and a must have outfit for a mom on the go. It’s comfortable, stylish and allows me to chase after my son at the park.

Which one is your favorite? I think mine is the maxi dress with the jean jacket.

So yesterday I finally went to the new Target store that opened up near my house. I’ve heard good and bad reviews. This is what I found:

  • Prices are comparable to Walmart.
  • Greater selection of certain products.
  • Great kids products selection.
  • They carry Seventh Generation products. Cheaper than my local grocery store.
  • Closer to my house than Walmart is.
  • They have a pretty good shoe collection for women. Fell in love with this nude patent pair with studded heels. (did not buy it).
  • Their women’s section is pathetic. No where near as good as the one in the states.
  • Their diapers are cheaper than Walmart.
  • They price match.

So will I go to the new Target? Yes because:

  1. It’s closer to my house than Walmart is
  2. Prices are similar to that of Walmart
  3. I’m hoping that they get a better selection of women’s fashion.

What Being A Mom Means To Me

25673

A few months back a few bloggers did a series on what being a mom means to them. It got me thinking about what being a mom means to me.

Being a mom means sacrificing many things and that started for me at 4 weeks into my pregnancy. I had such bad morning sickness that I had to give up coffee until well into my 6th month (yes you can drink coffee if you’re pregnant, just as long as you stick to 1 cup and you drank it before you were pregnant). For many of us we begin the sacrifice of giving up alcohol once we start trying. I have to say that was by far the easiest thing to give up until Christmas hit and then it sucked.

Being a mom means getting up in the middle of the night, countless times.

Being a mom means sleep deprivation!!!

Being a mom means my heart melting when Aiden told me that “he loved me” for the first time.

Being a mom means being a super hero to my son.

Being a mom means watching my son grow and excel at things.

Being a mom means cuddling with my son when he feels sad, kissing a boo boo and chasing the monsters away.

Being a mom means falling in love with cars, trucks, firetrucks, garbage trucks, bugs, and anything boy related.

Being a mom means reading the same Curious George story over and over again to a smiling hooligan.

Being a mom means fighting back the tears when I see my son hurt.

Being a mom means learning when to apologize to my son.

Being a mom means being accountable for what I do, because I have a little person watching every little thing I do and say.

Being a mom means trying to find a balance between motherhood and who I was before I had Aiden.

Being a mom means doing the right thing even when it’s the hardest thing in the world.

Being a mom means discipline, structure and routine.

Being a mom means endless hugs and kisses.

Being a mom means countless pillow fights and tickle fights.

Being a mom means having my patience tried, many, many times a day.

Being a mom means learning to say no.

Being a mom means learning about who you are and what you are capable of.

Being a mom means you’re much stronger than you think.

Being a mom means sleep deprivation, sore nipples and recovering from your delivery.

Being a mom means adjusting to your new role as a restaurant to your child.

Being a mom means learning to be a mom.

Being a mom means learning you can’t do everything (I’m still struggling with that one).

Being a mom means learning to let go of your child and letting them make their own mistakes.

Being a mom means learning to guide our children until they become adults and to let them go to make their own lives.

Being a mom means learning to fight for your child.

Being a mom means learning to buy multiples of your child’s favorite toy.

I could go on and on. Being Aiden’s mom means the world to me. Watching him grow every day and develop into this little human is the most amazing thing in the world.

May this blog inspire you to put together your own fabulous mom-on-the-go outfit, to check out the new Target store and to think about what being a mom means to you.
