Pink, Testosterone & Christmas CD’s

This is what I am wearing today: pink sweater, purple pants and boots. Perfect outfit for a rainy day. It’s raining like it never wants to end. I’m thankful for Fridays because that means no activities for my son today :)!!! We are headed grocery shopping and then nothing, and I can’t wait. We are lucky enough to have our godsons come over tonight and my son can’t wait. We will be entertaining 3 boys tonight, including Aiden. Should be fun. Pizza and Star Wars!!! What more could a 11 yr, 8 yr and 3.5 yr old want?

Pants ( R W & Co.). Sweater, Necklace & Earrings ( J Crew). Boots (Browns). Watch (Michael Kors). Bracelets (Stella & Dot).

Growing up we listened to Christmas music from the beginning of December until New Years. I loved it. I grew up in a Hungarian household filled with Christmas Carols both in English and in Hungarian. I’ve continued this tradition since moving out. I’ve accumulated quite the eclectic collection. Below are some of my favorite Christmas CD’s.

1. Sing With Me This Christmas- I purchased this cd for my son’s first Christmas. He was only 7 months old then, but I couldn’t resist buying it at Costco. It is a Christmas cd, sung by kids, for kids, of traditional Christmas carols. It also came with a colourful book including the words to each and every song. At 3.5 yrs old, my son absolutely loves this cd. If you can find it at Costco your kids will love it.

2. Bebe Winans: My Christmas Prayer. This cd was featured on Oprah many years ago and it is amazing. The song title, My Christmas Prayer, brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It talks about peace and love and that’s all I wish for everyone. It is a beautiful cd and would make a great stocking stuffer or gift for yourself.

3. Santa Baby. I bought this cd a few years ago at Starbucks and I love it. It’s not your traditional Christmas cd and that’s why I like it. It features artists like Sarah Mclachlan, Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. If you want something different this holiday this will make the perfect addition to your collection.

4. Sarah McLachlan’s Wintersong. I’ve been a fan of hers for many years and when this cd came out a few years ago, I was so excited. It’s a beautiful cd with traditional and new Christmas music.

5. Josh Groban’s Noel. I’m still amazed that such a powerful sound can come out of Josh Groban. This is a traditional Christmas cd that will leave you with goose bumps.

6. Faith Hill’s Joy To The World. I’m not a big fan of country but I love Faith Hill. This is a beautiful Christmas cd. Her voice is amazing and her last song, A Baby Changes Everything, makes me emotional, thinking of my beautiful son.

7. Andrea Bocelli’s My Christmas. I have been a fan of his for over a decade. He had me when I heard his song Vivo Per Lei. It’s not as famous as Time to Say Goodbye, but when I heard it for the first time, I was mesmerized. Andrea Bocelli sure knows how to romance a woman. Anyways back to his Christmas cd, it’s phenomenal!!! My favorite is his duet with the Muppets. I can’t help but smile when I hear the Muppets.

8. Boney M’s The 20 Greatest Christmas Songs. I grew up listening to this cd, well actually it was a record back then :). I was so happy when I found it on a cd. In Grade 5, we did a dance number to Mary’s Boy Child for our Christmas concert, and I was Mary. Then we all rocked out to Feliz Navidad. That was a long time ago. Enjoy, it’s a great cd :).

One of my favorite Christmas songs of all time is: All I want For Christmas. My favorite version, and don’t tell Mariah, is from the movie Love Actually. The soundtrack to Love Actually is also amazing!!! Check it out.

You can find all these cd’s at iTunes. I hope you get a chance to listen to some of these songs. They put a smile on my face, warm my heart and give me hope that some day we will all have peace at Christmas.

50 Shades of Blue, Red Hightlights, Hamburger Soup and Ginger Molasses Cookies

This is what I am wearing today: blue sweater, jeans, boots and my blue Coach watch. This is for you Michelle!!!! Here it is: 50 Shades of Blue. I thought that it would look funny to have so many different shades of blue in one outfit, but because the jeans are neutral and the watch is so small, I find the three go together well. Plus my favorite color is blue :) .

Jeans (Gap). Sweater ( J Crew). Boots (Fergalicious). Necklace (Banana Republic). Bracelets (Poshlocket). Watch (Coach).

As you can see my hair has been cut, thank God!!! It was lacking shape and color. We added some red highlights and I love it. Check it out.

Canadian Hamburger Soup

‘Tis the season for making warm, hearty soups. I got this recipe from my mother-in-law and it’s fantastic. It’s Hamburger Soup and it taste amazing. It’s rich, hearty and pretty much includes everything but the kitchen sink. You can totally add whatever you want, or just stick to the recipe. It’s the perfect soup and meal for the Winter season.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onions, peeled and chopped fine
  • 1 garlic cloves, minced fine
  • 1 (28 ounce) cans plum tomatoes, undrained
  • 4 cups low sodium beef broth
  • 1 (10 ounce) cans tomato soup (I use 1 28oz. can of crushed tomatoes instead)
  • 3 carrots, peeled and chopped fine
  • 4 celery ribs, leaves removed and chopped fine
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper ( even more is better)
  • 1/3 cup barley
  • salt, to taste

Directions

  1. In a large dutch oven, brown meat, adding onions and garlic. When meat has lost its pink colour, drain off any excess fat if there is any visible.

2. Add all remaining ingredients, turn heat down to low so soup is barely simmering, cover, and let cook for about 2 hours (even longer is fine). After one hour, taste soup and add salt if necessary.

3. If you have leftovers (soup freezes well, so consider making the whole pot even if it’s a lot for your family), be aware that it tends to thicken when cool. When reheating, I always add a little more beef broth.

Enjoy. I’ve even put some Kale into the food processor and added it to the soup. You can’t even taste that it’s in the soup. It’s cooking on my stove as we speak. Enjoy. Here is one of my favorite cookie recipes: Ginger Molasses Cookies. I made it this past Friday as a hostess gift. They are soft, chewy and just the right amount of molasses and ginger.

Crinkled Molasses Cookies

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 butter
  • 1/4 molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp of ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt

1. Cream butter, then add sugar, molasses and egg.

2. In a separate bowl combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt.

3. Add flour mixture to your creamed butter. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

4. Roll into whatever size balls you wish. Roll it into sugar. Place balls 2 inches apart.

5. Bake at 350 degrees between 8-10 mins. Depends on how big you make the cookies and how chewy you like them. I recommend baking them for 8 mins.

Makes between 2-4 dozen. Depends on the size of balls you make.

Enjoy!!! They will be devoured, I promise you!!! :) These will be a hit at Christmas.

Oprah!!!! & Book Review: “Before I Go To Sleep” by S. J. Watson

This is what I am wearing today: a white tunic, with a pink cardigan, skinny jeans and my boots. As you can see I’m wearing a hat again, I’m finally going to get my hair done tonight. I can’t wait. My favorite part is the scalp massage. I could sit in the chair for hours :).

Cardigan & Jeans (Gap). Top ( H & M). Boots (Browns). Necklace (Stella & Dot). Hat (R W & Co.).

Guess what????? I’M GOING TO SEE OPRAH, AGAIN!!!! I’m so excited :). I saw one of her last shows 1.5 yrs ago, here is my post from my visit. I didn’t even know she was coming to town. Thank God for Facebook. Merry Christmas to me :). Is it wrong of me to already be planning my outfit??!!! :) I think my sequin polka dot top will be very appropriate for this special occasion.

Book Review: “Before I Go To Sleep” by S. J. Watson

I just finished reading the book “Before I Go To Sleep” by S. J. Watson. It’s a phenomenal read. I finished it in two extremely busy days. I basically read like a fiend.

The premise of this book is similar to that of the book “The Pilot’s Wife” by Anita Shreve and the movie “50 First Dates” with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. The story is about a woman, named Christine, who has both short term and long term amnesia. She loses her memory after a “horrific car accident” and every time she wakes up, she doesn’t remember where she is, how old she is or what happened to her. The story parallels Anita Shreve’s book “The Pilot’s Wife”, in that all is not what it seems. It makes you question your life and whether you can truly trust the people in your life.

S. J. Watson captures your attention from the first paragraph: “The bedroom is strange. Unfamiliar. I don’t know where I am, how I came to be here. I don’t know how I’m going to get home.” (p.3) The reader is immersed in the story from the beginning. There is no unnecessary introduction, it catapults you right into the action. As a busy, working mom, this is the perfect book. It’s a page turner and a very quick read. Like I said, I finished it in two days.

I like how descriptive the author is. I love how he describes Christine, the main character, seeing herself aged for the first time; examining herself in the mirror and seeing all the scars, bumps, and wrinkles. “The face I see looking back at me is not my own. The hair has no volume…; the skin on the cheeks and under the chin sags; the lips are thin, the mouth turned down.” (p. 4-5) You can visualize Christine seeing herself for the first time. He uses adjectives effectively to immerse the reader into the story. You feel as though you are voyeur into Christine’s life.

The story though is not without its faults. Her cell phones are always charged, her husband never catches her with Dr. Nash, she doesn’t have any friends in her life, and she doesn’t inquire what the pills are that she finds (don’t worry I’m not ruining any storyline here!!!) There are other issues that I found with the story, but then I really would be revealing key parts of the story.

Bottom line is that I would totally recommend this book to read. Keep it in mind for a stocking stuffer for a friend or loved one. Great book. Definitely a must read. S. J. Watson does an amazing job for his first novel.

Christmas Activities To Do With Your Family

This is what I am wearing today: a classic black turtleneck, jeans and my flats. I thought I’d spice up my top by adding a necklace. I’m still sick. I think it may be time to head back to the doctor. I can’t shake this bloody cold. I know it’s due to my heart but I’m worried that it may be time to start some antibiotics. I’m so ready for this to all be gone.

Turtleneck (R W and Co.). Jeans (Gap). Necklace ( J Crew). Shoes (Aldo).

Christmas Activities To Do With Your Family

With Christmas fast approaching here are some great activities to do with your kids. You can even do some of these if you don’t have kids. My husband and I did many of these things well before we had my son. My list is Vancouver specific, but if you do some research I’m sure you can find similar activities where you live. Christmas is my favorite holiday and I love seeing the lights and exploring our city all decked out.

1. The Peak of Christmas on Grouse Mountain- Grouse Mountain has great activities for the entire family, including Breakfast with Santa (you have to make reservations separately for this), sleigh rides, visit Santa’s workshop, skating, reindeer show, and much more). They have a special family deal for $79.95.

2. Bright Nights: Stanley Park Train- Experience Stanley Park all decked out with lights and take a trip on the train through a Christmas Wonderland. Buy tickets ahead at Ticketmaster’s site.

3. Festival of Light’s at VanDusen Garden- The botanical garden is transformed with thousands of beautiful light creations.

4. Vancouver Christmas Market- It’s a traditional German Christmas market located at the Plaza at Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

5. Capilano Suspension Bridge- The Capilano Suspension Bridge is decorated with beautiful lights. There is cookie decorating, a band playing Christmas carols, glass blowing and much, much more.

6. The Bloedel Conservatory- The conservatory is decorated in lights.

7. Magic of Santa Musical- Located at the Pacific Coliseum. It’s a musical for all ages where the main character, Emily, looks for her own Christmas wish.

8. Christmas Symphony for Kids- Tiny Tots located in Port Coquitlam and Vancouver. Kids Koncerts located in Vancouver at the Orpheum. It’s a great way to introduce your kids to music and the symphony.

9. Vancouver Aquarium: Magic of the North- They have a scuba diving Santa and feature the Polar Express movie in 4D.

10. Christmas at Canada Place- Take a walk around the sails that are lite up with Christmas colours, through the trails of nicely decorated Christmas trees, and have breakfast with Santa, see the Woodward’s window displays and much more.

For all these activities I’ve included the links for more information. Most of these activities require you to purchase your tickets ahead of time and many of them are collecting for the food bank. So if you head down to any one of these activities, please bring an extra can or two of food to donate.

I know that my family and I will be doing a few of these activities. I can’t wait!!! :)

Stuck On You Labels Review and Giveaway!!!!

This is what I am wearing today. I decided to belt my cardigan/vest. Belts are a good way to define your waist when wearing anything bulky, like a cardigan. I added a turquoise bubble necklace, jeans (of course) and riding boots.

Cardigan, Top and Jeans (Gap). Boots (Browns). Necklace (Etsy).

I recently was contacted by the company Stuck On You Labels to do a product review. I was really excited because since Aiden started preschool this Fall, I am labeling all his things with a magic marker. I’ve been wanting to get labels for quite some time, so this came at the perfect time. Below is my order:

Stuck On You Labels is a company that personalizes labels for shoes, clothing, pencils, pretty much anything you can imagine. They even personalize gifts like robes, lunch boxes, back packs, stationary, etc. Their products are washing machine/dryer safe, dishwasher and microwave safe. It’s a great Christmas gift for someone you know that has kids. They ship to both Canada and the US.

I received my products last week and I’m very happy with my order. I received:

  • Christmas Address Labels. You a few options to choose from. I love how you get 4 different designs within the template you choose.

  • Christmas Gift Labels. I picked the same template as the address labels. They are adorable and you customize what you would like on them.

  • 5+ Pack – name labels, bag tag, clothing labels. This is the one I’ve been waiting for. It’s a pack of 5 different labels that go on your child’s shoes, clothing, pencils, backpack, and even includes a personalized luggage tag.

Although the kit is not cheap, costs $49.95, I think it’s completely worth it. Beats using a magic marker on everything your child owns. I like that it’s easy to apply and you can customize it by choosing the font, graphics, color and what you want it to say.

This would make a great Christmas gift for either yourself, or someone you know that has kids. Thanks to Stuck On You Labels, I am giving away a $50 gift card to their fantastic store. The gift card is perfect for the 5+ pack, as it costs $ 49.95. The contest closes on November 30. I’ll announce the winner in Monday’s post. To enter, please leave a comment letting me know what you would use the gift card for, if you won. This contest is open to both Canada and the US. Good luck! Remember even if you don’t have kids, this would make a great Christmas gift for someone who does :).

Good luck and Happy Monday Everyone!!!!

Holiday Looks Recap and Black Friday Deals

Last night I went out for a girl’s dinner and a movie night. I’m still not 100% healthy, but I had a nap in the afternoon and figured I really needed to get out. We saw Breaking Dawn Part 2 and I have to say it was the best one yet. I read all the books and loved them, but can’t say I cared too much for the movies. They did a great job of ending the story and kept you at the edge of your seat. I won’t say anymore and yes it was worth seeing. Woke up this morning to no voice. I’m thinking my family will be happy about that :) (just kidding!!!). Hoping to rest it up before I head back to work on Sunday. Today my only plans are to bake chocolate chip cookies and as my son likes to call them “ginger cookies” with my son. I’ll post the recipe for the ginger molasses cookies next week. They are fantastic.

This is what I wore yesterday: a sweater/poncho, jeans and my favorite booties. It’s a great outfit to run around and do errands in. My outfit today will consist of Lululemon pants, a t-shirt and a sweater. No judging!!! Fridays are one of the rare days I get, where my son and I don’t have to rush out to preschool and/or activities. I want to “frump” around the house today and enjoy some much-needed calm and quiet. Next weekend is already the beginning of December and the mayheim will be in full swing. Plus what better day to bake cookies, then on a cool, wet, rainy, dreary Black Friday. Yes, I will not be heading to the malls today.

Sweater ( R W & Co.). Jeans and Shirt(Gap). Boots (Fergalicious). Watch (Michael Kors).

Here’s a summary of this week’s posts on different Holiday Looks:

  • purchase something sparkly to wear.
  • make sure you have some basics in your closet ie. black pants, pencil skirt, patent heel and a great clutch.
  • get yourself some sparkly bling.
  • accessorize with some fantastic shoes.

Remember that dressing for the holidays doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. I tried to feature items that were reasonably priced and that weren’t just the latest trend. There are lots of classic and versatile pieces, ones that you will have in your closet for many years.

Please keep in mind that whatever you buy must fit you properly. You need to try it on. The key to trying things on is that the item should fit the biggest part of your body. Once you manage that, then you can alter the rest. If it doesn’t fit the largest part of you then you need to put it back. Doesn’t matter how pretty it is or how cheap it is, if it doesn’t fit you, put it back!!!!!

The last thing to remember is that it must make you feel pretty. If it doesn’t, then put it back!!!! How can you enjoy yourself this holiday season if you don’t feel pretty. If money is tight, then get yourself a nice top, something that will make you feel good about yourself. It’s the holidays and everyone should feel good about themselves.

I hope this week’s posts were helpful and that it gave you guys some ideas. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions and/or comments you might have at vodkainfusedlemonade@gmail.com or leave me a comment.
