Super Bowl Fun!

Like many of you, we watched the Super Bowl on Sunday and celebrated Seattle’s crushing win with some friends. We had a great time. We made an insane amount of food, enjoyed far too many martinis and were able to actually watch the game!!! It’s so nice to have a child old enough that can play with other kids his age and we adults can sit and relax. It was wonderful. The entire weekend was great. We spent both days actually with great friends. It was much needed. Below are pictures of our Super Bowl party. We also had the house decorated for Valentine’s Day. This is what you get for having a toddler who loves decorations!!!!!! :)

All of the amazing food!!!!! I even had blue and green napkins and plates.

Super Bowl: Vodka Infused Lemonade What’s a Super Bowl party without a little bling and Cosmos ?!?!?!?!?

Super Bowl: Vodka Infused Lemonade I had far too many Cosmos while watching the Super Bowl. Our official drinks of the game were Cosmos and of course Bud !! :)

What’s a Super Bowl party without cupcakes!?!?!?!?!?!?! :)

Cupcakes: Vodka Infused Lemonade

I did make 24, but somewhere along the way 2 disappeared and no one will cop to it. I think it was my husband :)!!!!!

May this blog inspire you to spend more time with friends. It felt so good to be able to spend time with people that we care about. It’s nice to be able to be ourselves with them. We’ve spent far too many years with people that we couldn’t be genuine with. So thank you “friends”, you know who you are, for a much needed relaxing and fun weekend :).

Olive, Rain and Wild Weekend

Hi Everyone. It’s seems like forever since I wrote a post. The last 2 posts were written last week. We had a crazy but amazing weekend, filled with lots of firsts and some changes to come. Before I get to the that I wanted to remind everyone of my weekly Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up that’s tomorrow. Hope you can join me.

This is what I wore yesterday: my olive pants, white tee and black vest. It’s raining yet again!!! Vancouver does have a rain forest-like climate. It pretty much rains from November to July. Let’s hope that July brings some much needed sunshine. I, along with everyone else here in the lower mainland are done with the rain.

Henry Lou Bracelet

Henry Lou sent over this fabulous bracelet. It is made out of leather and has been spotted on many celebrities. I wore it this weekend and I love it. It’s versatile, cute and my style. I want to thank Henry Lou for this fabulous bracelet and keep reading because I’ll be giving away this fabulous bracelet in the upcoming weeks.

As I said earlier, this weekend was filled with a lot of things. Saturday was insane. We had dance class, end of the year gymnastics, a bday party and dance pictures. Below are some pictures.

My son’s feet remind me of Hobbit feet and they are too cute!!!

On Sunday we went to Ikea and picked out a big boy bed for Aiden. We went with bunk bed that his friend also has. It’s not as high as a traditional one and you can get a canopy that goes over top of the bed to keep him from falling out. We weren’t able to finish putting the bed together as there were 2 screws missing. He did manage to sleep in his “big boy” bed all by himself, without getting up in the middle of the night on the mattress on the floor.

IMG_3880

We also had my son’s end of the year dance recital. My husband and I couldn’t be prouder of him. He was the only boy and he wore his crab costume proudly. He danced his little heart out. He had no fear. He went on stage like he was an old pro. I cheered so loudly and cried my eyes out (shocking I know!! :)). I am so proud of that little guy. This is us at his performance.

I have much more to share but will continue in tomorrow’s post.

Stripes, How To Make An R2D2 Cake & Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up

This is what I am wearing today: a striped top (of course), skinny jeans and my bow flats. It’s not the nicest weather and this outfit is perfect to drop my son off at preschool and run errands. Again indoor pictures as it was raining outside.

R2D2 CAKE

This is the cake I made for my son for his 4th Birthday, at his request. I thought I would include a how-to on how I made this cake. I’ll be honest, making this cake was a labour of love for both my husband and I. It probably took us 24 hrs from the first sketch to the last star piped to make this cake, but it was so worth it. Check out my son’s reaction when he first saw the cake. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid more excited to see their birthday cake, than my son.

R2D2 CAKE

Instructions on the making of R2D2

Supplies

  • 1- 8×11″ rectangle pan
  • 1- 11×17″ rectangle pan
  • 1 12″ in diameter circular pan
  • parchment paper
  • solid cake board
  • aluminum foil to cover the cake board
  • piping gel
  • blue, black and red food colour
  • paper
  • maker
  • cooling wracks
  • 4 decorating bags
  • 4 couplers
  • 3 #18 star decorating tips
  • 1 # 3 circular decorating tip
  • 2 batches of Martha Stewart’s Swiss Meringue Buttercream Icing

1. Before we could begin baking or decorating the cake, we had to make an R2D2 the size of our cake. Our cake was made out of 3 different cakes: 1- 8×11″ rectangle pan, 1- 11×17″ rectangle pan and 1- 12″ in diameter circular pan. The picture below is of the making of the drawing. Thank you to my amazing husband for this part!!! xoxo

R2D2 CAKE

This is what the cake is going to look like.

R2D2 CAKE

2. The next step was to bake the cakes. I made 3 batches of Martha Stewart’s Ultimate Chocolate cake. It really is the ultimate chocolate cake. It stays nice and moist for a long time.

3. My favorite icing is Martha Stewart’s Swiss Meringue Buttercream. It’s smooth, creamy, not too sweet and heavenly!!! :) I made a double batch. Once the icing is made, colour a very small amount grey, about 1 cup blue, another small amount red (you only need it for the eye. I used red fondant) and then colour a complete package of piping gel black.

4. Find yourself a very sturdy cake board base. We used an actual wood plank and covered it with aluminum foil.

5. Then we had to cut out the shapes to make R2 and then stick them together with icing. The best way to do that is to make a copy of your picture and cut that out and place it over the cake and then use that as a template to cut it out. Makes things much easier. That way you don’t have to worry about making the head (for instance) too big. That’s what happened to me and I ended up having to decorate R2′s face free hand.

R2D2 CAKE

6. Trace R2D2 onto parchment paper. Then cut out the head, body and legs.Turn the pieces around and use the side that you didn’t trace on, to re-trace R2 using the piping gel.

7. Place the newly traced piece with piping gel, gently and carefully onto the cake. Using a paint brush, retrace over the piping gel to ensure the gel gets securely placed on the cake. Then gently remove the parchment paper and voila R2′s head.

8. Now start piping in the icing. I started at the top of his head and proceeded down. Then I did his body and left his legs for the end. It took me about 2 hrs to ice him.

Final Product:

R2D2 CAKE

This cake fed about 45-50 people with plenty of leftovers left. I was paranoid we wouldn’t have enough cake, so I made sure to make a big one.

I wish you lots of luck in making this cake. It’s not that difficult but it takes a lot of blood, sweat and some tears (perhaps). It was definitely a labour of love.

Pink & Preppy & Psy’s Newest Song :)

Yesterday was an incredibly busy day. It started with dropping my son off at preschool, then headed grocery shopping, then went home to put together a cake order, then get my son from preschool, eat lunch, finish the cake and then head to bookclub in the evening. I was supposed to go to bootcamp as well, but my head was killing me and I was absolutely exhausted. The weekend at work exhausted me and getting this cake done was also tiring.

Here are some pictures of the cake. It was for a friend’s daughter’s first birthday.

IMG_2881

Before I get to my outfit, I just wanted to say that no matter how tired I am after making/decorating a cake, I am also extremely proud. I’m not trying to toot my own horn. Let me explain. Yesterday when I picked my son up from preschool I told him that he can do anything the puts his mind to. Covering a cake in fondant is not my favorite. I find it challenging and as I do more, I am getting better. Needless to say it causes me stress. What I want my son to see is that hard work pays off. I want him to see me excel at something other than being his mother. Yesterday he saw me challenge myself and succeed. I never not want him to not do something because it’s too hard. I know from personal experience that only from my failures and challenges have I succeeded.

Now, onto my outfit for today. I am wearing my pastel polka dot legging jeans, a white button shirt layered under a pink Tippi sweater with my favorite flats. I am in a pink and preppy kind of mood, hence the title of this post.

May this blog inspire you to challenge yourself and to do something out of your comfort zone.

I also wanted to say that my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families who were at the Boston Marathon. This act of violence was senseless and cowardly. I still believe that there is good in this world. We just all need to open our hearts to one another and learn to accept each other.

Here is Psy’s newest song, Gentleman M/V, to put a smile on your faces. Enjoy!!!

My Funny Valentine & My Favorite Romantic Movies

My last outfit for my Valentine themed week is a black and white stripe skirt, shirt and red cardigan. I was going to wear red lipstick but I thought that would be too much for a preschool drop off. Here it is my Valentine’s Day outfit:

I had to include a picture of this amazing bow belt.

My plans for Valentine’s Day are as follows: drop my son off at preschool complete with the red velvet cupcakes I made for his preschool party and his Valentine’s cards, and then come home and do nothing until I have to get him again. Yup that’s my Valentine’s Day present to me!!! :) For the past 5 years we get a heart shaped pizza from Boston Pizza (they donate some of the proceeds to the Heart & Stroke foundation) and that’s how we will celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Below are the cupcakes I made for my son’s preschool Valentine’s Day party. I made red velvet cupcakes with swiss meringue icing and home made chocolate hearts.

My son made me this Valentine on Sunday and he couldn’t resist or wait to give it to me. He made me go into the ugly cry, again :).

The Symphony and A Preschool Concert

On Saturday after my son’s dance class, we went to the Symphony. It’s specially set up for toddlers, by the VSO (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra). This is our third time going and my son loves it. It’s a great way to introduce children to classical music in a relatively cheap way. They offer 4 shows a year. For more information click on this link. Below is what I wore to the show. I normally don’t buy or wear holiday sweaters, but I couldn’t resist this one. The bow is adorable.

As I mentioned before, my son’s preschool Christmas concert was this past Monday. I was totally prepared to go into the “ugly cry”, but it never happened, I got distracted with Aiden trying to find me. The minute he got on the stage, he yelled out “Mama, I can’t see you!!” and “Mama where are you?”. My husband and I were frantically waving our hands in the air trying to get his attention, but all he could see was the big bright stage lights. He could hear us but he really couldn’t see us, so after each song, there were 4, he would repeat “Mama, I can’t see you!!!”. It was too cute :) He basically stole the show!!! I am so proud of these little people. These 3 and 4 yr old little munchkins stood on stage by themselves, without any fear. How many adults would do that? I loved watching all the kids sing, dance and have fun. I wish I was more like them, able to just be in the moment. Congrats to my son, his teachers and to all those adorable toddlers for putting on an amazing Christmas concert!!! :)

I tried to get a picture of him but he was acting like a monkey, so this is the best I could do. By the way he picked out the tie.

IMG_1157

We were asked to bring a snack to share with the rest of the parents and kids after the show. I had some cupcakes leftover so I made some Christmas Trees.

IMG_1128

Last but not least, what I wore to my son’s Christmas concert. I just realized that my outfits in this post have something in common: bows. I couldn’t decide which shoes to wear; I have sequin flats, patent black heels and boots. I decided to go with the boots. Below is a picture of me in the heels.

May this blog inspire you to add a “chic” holiday sweater to your wardrobe and to explore the symphony.
