Activities For Your Kids During The Strike

Kid Activities

Today I am home for a number of reasons. The first being that my son caught a stomach bug and the second, and most important reason, is that the teachers remain on strike. This was going to be a post about me ranting and raving about how our government is full of absolute shit and how they don’t care about our kids, but I realized that this is everywhere at the moment. If you want to read about my rant that I wrote in June click here. I realized that I can continue to be negative or I can do something about it.

Earlier this Summer I realized that I wanted to keep my son’s brain stimulated. I wanted to keep all that he learned in Preschool fresh in his mind and I also wanted to build on it. I was at Michaels and I found a great book called Big Workbook Kindergarten. I also found similar books at Costco, Walmart and at Chapters. Honestly the best $10 I spent. I can’t believe how much he learned. He learned about pattern recognition, comparing objects, picking the bigger object vs. the smaller one, spelling, writing, counting, learning to tell time. It’s been wonderful for his development. We did a little bit every day and he finished it well before the end of the Summer. I was at Walmart at the beginning of August and picked up some amazing tools in anticipation of the strike continuing. Below are some great items I picked up that won’t break the bank and will keep your child’s brain going and will help to prepare them for Kindergarten. (My husband joked that by the time school starts, my son will be at a grade 2 level.)

Spelling: Crayola 4 word double sided puzzle

Crayola Puzzle

I found this on my way into Target earlier in August and my son loves it. It’s a simple double sided puzzle. The idea is that you can make 36 simple 4 letter words. It’s a great way to get your kids to start learning how to read and spell.

Activity Books

Activity Boooks

These books can be found anywhere: Costco, Walmart, Chapters and even Michaels. What I like about them is that they build on concepts and start preparing your child to think, to think in an academic way. I love watching my son learn how do to each activity. You should have seen his little eyes when he made the connection regarding patterns. I love it. They have books from all ages, Kindergarten all the way up to grade 6.

Writing Your Letters & Numbers

activity

In preschool my son learned to write the alphabet and numbers. I wanted to continue that and build on it, so I decided to purchase a few exercise books, which are really cheap right now for back to school. The idea is to get them to repeatedly write the letters, upper and lower case, along with numbers. For me writing legibly is very important. I can’t stand poor penmanship!!!! These books can be purchased anywhere.

Flashcards: Learning to spell

Flashcards

When I was in Walmart they had these flashcards for $2.99. The idea is that one set of cards has a letter from the alphabet and the other cards have the ending. You now need to put the cards together to make a word. It’s great because it teaches kids letter recognition, spelling and rhyming. My son loves it. It’s a great way to introduce your child to spelling and reading.

Telling Time

Learning to tell Time

I know that kids don’t learn to tell time until they are in grade 2 or 3, but my son loves watches. I told him that if he learns to tell time the right way, then I’ll buy him whatever watch he wants. I found this pack of 36 dry erase clocks for only $4 at Target. Thought it would be the perfect tool to start teaching my son to tell time.

BC Curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 9

If you’re concerned about what your child is missing during the strike, you can click on this link. It’s from the BC government and it includes what your child should be learning from Kindergarten to grade 9. So if you’re worried, print it off and see where your child is at and then you can see where you need to supplement. Again here is the link: https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/gc.php?lang=en

Day camps, Daycare & activities offered in the lower mainland

Here are 2 great links from The Province and from Global on different day camps, daycares and activities to help keep your kids busy, and your sanity intact.

http://blogs.theprovince.com/2014/08/26/day-camps-and-programs-offered-during-b-c-teachers-strike/

http://globalnews.ca/news/1348742/daycare-options-during-the-teachers-strike/

Learning to read

I have yet to check this out, but a friend of mine posted this saying her son likes it. It’s called Reading Eggs. It’s an interactive way, using the computer, to learn how to read. They have activities and games to make learning to read fun. This is definitely something we will be trying out.

I really hope that this helps alleviate some anxiety that you may have regarding your child’s learning being affected. Regardless of whether or not the strike would have happened, I still would have invested in these resources. I don’t believe that my child’s learning solely depends on his teacher and what he learns in school. It’s up to us parents to solidify and reinforce what they learn at school. We also need to take responsibility for their learning. It’s a team effort.

I truly hope that this strike ends soon as it has saddened me to no end that we couldn’t enjoy back to school this year with all the turmoil and uncertainty.

May this blog inspire you purchase some tools to help keep your child’s mind stimulated during the strike.

Happy Hump Day Everyone!!!!!!!

Berry Picking at Krause Farms & Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up

It’s been on my bucket list to go berry picking with my son and last Wednesday we not only went, but we had a blast. Gotta say my son is better berry picker than I am :) We had so much fun!!!!!! My husband is coming with us next time to pick some raspberries. We went to Krause Farms, located in Langley. At Krause Farms it’s about much more than berry picking. You can enjoy some wine tasting, have a yummy waffle breakfast, enjoy their amazing milkshakes and corn pizza. They also have a store where you can purchase vegetables (their corn is honestly the best I’ve ever had), home made pies, honey, syrups, and yummy donuts. My husband quickly figured out that my trip was about much more than berry picking. It was about food. It usually is about food, for me anyways. There are still quite a lot of berries left for picking, so if you want, make your way to Krause Farms.

I love that once you arrive, you wait for a very small school bus and it takes you to the blueberry fields, where someone greets you and gives you your own row of berries to pick from. I basically just held my bucket underneath the bush and watched plump, juicy blueberries fall into it. My son was a great picker. He not only picked just ripe berries but he didn’t eat any. Very proud of him. He also ended up filling up his basket completely, all by himself. Lots of fun was had by both of us. We are really excited to go back with my husband and enjoy the waffles.

Nautical, Mickey Mouse & Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up

Last Sunday marked the last activity my son had for this school year. It was his end of the year dance recital. The kids ended up putting me into the “ugly cry”. When they all came out on stage during the Finale, I just couldn’t help myself. They all worked so hard and they did an amazing job. They should all be so proud of themselves. Below are pictures of my son in his Mickey Mouse costume. I decided to go for the nautical theme for my outfit: red, white and navy. I bought these amazing navy and white heels from Michael Kors many, many, many years ago and I finally wore them again. It’s been almost 5 years since I last wore them, tragedy, I tell you!!!!! :)

Although I’m sad that another year has come and gone, I’m grateful for a little reprieve. Looking forward to some much needed days off this Summer without anything scheduled, although who I am kidding, I’ve still got my son scheduled for some activities. I can’t help it. I’m a creature of habit and I like to be organized!!!!!!

Our Dinosaur Train Experience

Dinosaur Train Giveaway: Vodka Infused Lemonade

A few weeks ago I ran a contest to meet the gang from the PBS show Dinosaur Train. Yesterday, my family and I, had a chance to check it out. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I pretty much figured it would be similar to that of Thomas. As with Thomas, the Dinosaur Train is located at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park, in Squamish. We arrived about an hour earlier then the train departs. You could arrive 20-30 mins before the train is scheduled to leave and that would be plenty of time. The train greets you right in the parking lot and takes you all the way to the Round House.

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

Once you get settled in the train, a ticket person comes around and hands out the tickets. If you have chosen to pick up your tickets at “Will Call”, this is also done on the train. You receive your tickets, colouring pages, crayons and an activity book.

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

Before the train takes off, a person blowing bubbles comes around along with a lady who tells “funny” dinosaur jokes and gives you interesting dinosaur facts. My son loved the bubbles, he even tried to eat them, silly boy :).

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

At the Round House, we were greeted by a life size “Buddy”, one of the characters from the Dinosaur Train.

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade With help from some dinosaur tracks and the guide you were given on the Train, you make your way to either the mini train (your admission includes a ticket to go on the mini train) or to the Round House. We decided to make our way to the Round House.

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

Once you arrive at the Round House, you are greeted by a very large blow up Conductor, along with other dinosaurs. Once inside there are lots of activities to keep you and your little kidlets busy. There is a huge bouncy castle, an area where you can watch the Dinosaur Train and a couple of excavation areas where you use sifters, brushes, shovels to dig for fossils. They even allow you to keep a petrified piece of wood and a shell!!!

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

They have Dinosaur ballon makers (for a $2 fee), a station to get Dinosaur tattoos, a place to make masks and tables to allow you to relax and have a snack.

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

After a quick snack, we made our way to the mini train. The tickets for the mini train are included in your price of admission. It’s a 20 mins ride that takes you all around the Heritage Park.

Dinosaur Train: Vodka Infused Lemonade

You have a choice of either taking the train back to the parking lot or you can walk back. It’s only about a 5 minutes walk back to your car and it’s a nice walk.

So there you have it, our Dinosaur Train experience. Coming from the horses mouth, my son, he had a great time. We all did. It’s definitely worth it. Plan for it to be a day trip. We took the 1pm train and got home around 5. We also did stop on the way home to get a bite to eat, but plan to be at the park at least a couple of hours. It’s a great activity for everyone in your family and it’s also a great way to keep you all from getting cabin fever during Spring Break :)!!!

Although I was compensated for this post, all my opinions are my own.

Holiday 2013 Recap & Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up

During my 2 week blogging hiatus, I spent a lot of time with my husband and son relaxing, getting ready for Christmas, and most importantly having fun. Below are pictures of our holiday escapades. This Christmas was definitely the best by far as my son is now 4.5 yrs old and he totally got Santa and the whole Christmas vibe and we managed to not get the stomach flu. I’m not bragging believe me, it’s just that the last 3 years, we managed to have some sort of bug at Christmas. It was a nice treat not being sick. Enjoy the pictures, we sure had a lot of fun.

Disney On Ice & Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up

This past Saturday we surprised my son and took him to Disney On Ice. He has developed quite the crush on Belle. We didn’t tell him until he woke up from his nap, and boy was he excited!!!!! When we got there, all he could talk about was seeing Belle. When she finally appeared he clapped and yelled “Belle over here!!!!” I don’t think there was a more excited child in the building than Aiden. He could have jumped out of his little skin. We had an amazing time :)!!!! They put on a phenomenal show. All 4 Princesses were beautiful. If you think that Disney on Ice is just for little girls, you’re wrong, it’s for all kids, big and little :)!!!!!

Halloween Fun & Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up

This weekend was insanely busy. Both my husband and I worked and then we snuck in some family Halloween fun at Art Knapps. Being back at work part time sure has been challenging. Trying to juggle it all and of course I volunteered to make cupcakes for my son’s preschool Halloween party. Although I love it all, I will be happy when Thursday arrives and this fun chaos will settle down a bit. Would I want it any other way??? Heck NO!!!!!!! :) Below are pictures of us at Art Knapps and the Halloween cupcakes I made.

Come Visit Fort Edmonton Park

Fort Edmonton Park

Since leaving Edmonton I’ve mentioned to my husband that when we go back we must visit Fort Edmonton Park. As a kid we went a few times and I loved it so much that when I was 16/17 I volunteered there. I had so much fun. I was placed in the actual Fort part of Fort Edmonton, where I basically dressed in Native attire, learned to bead and make bracelets and necklaces and learned how to make Banic. I absolutely loved it. It was so peaceful and I kept day dreaming of what it must have felt like to live back in those days.

So when we deciding what to visit on our road trip to Edmonton, I told my husband that visiting Fort Edmonton was a must. I explained to our son that they have a real life train that takes you into the park and that was it, he was beyond excited. Enjoy the trip back in time :)

Fort Edmonton show cases what it was like to live in Edmonton back in 1846, 1885, 1905 and 1920. There is so much to see and do that I would definitely plan to spend the entire day here.

As soon as my son saw the amusement all he could focus on was riding the Ferris wheel.

Amusement Park: Fort Edmonton Park

While we were waiting for the train, I kept Aiden busy with the miniature train exhibit.

Miniature Train Exhibit: Fort Edmonton Park

The Train: Fort Edmonton Park

Besides riding the Ferris wheel, my son’s favourite part by far was riding this train. As it arrived he bellowed “hoo hoo!!!” at the top of his little lungs. He was so excited that everyone around him got excited too.

What I presume to be the sleeping quarters when you traveled back then. Can you imagine sleeping on that???

The train takes you all the way into the park to the actual Fort. This replica is what the Fort looked like back in 1846. This is where I volunteered many, many years ago. You travel from the Fort through to 1885, 1905 and 1920. Within time period they have houses, schools, shops, and a town basically set up to mimic what it would have looked like back then. It’s really very interesting and fun to walk through all those buildings and imagine what it would have been like to live back then.

We had lunch in the 1920′s in the Selkirk Hotel. We had an absolutely delicious lunch and you can even stay in the hotel. What a great experience that would be, maybe next time.

After that we headed to the Capitol Theatre where we watch a 4D movie of the history of Edmonton. It was extremely well done. I learned a thing or 2 about the history of my hometown.

The last stop was the amusement park. Unfortunately we didn’t have more time to walk through the 1920′s, it will have to wait until next time.

Thank to Fort Edmonton Park and Suzette for inviting us to review your gorgeous park. My family and I had an experience of a life time. I kept telling my husband how much he would love the park and he did. Both my boys did. Thank you so much and looking forward to visiting again soon.

If you live in Edmonton you must go visit Fort Edmonton Park. It’s such a great way to learn the history of Edmonton and your kids will love it.

If you’re not from Edmonton next time you’re planning a trip there, keep Fort Edmonton Park in mind.

May this post inspire you to check out your own version of Fort Edmonton Park where you live.
