Building A Summer Wardrobe: Shoes & Accesories

Summer Wardrobe

I’ve had a lot of fun writing this series on “Building A Summer Wardrobe” an affordable way. It seems like you guys also enjoyed it :) Today I will be focusing on shoes (wedges, sandals and runners) and accessories (hats, scarves, jewelry and purses). A Summer outfit is not complete without the right shoe and accessory. Wedges are a great way to dress up shorts and a tank top or add a sandal, hat and crossbody bag to a maxi dress. Sometimes people forget when planning their outfits that a simple hat or purse or jewelry can complete an outfit. Try a metallic sandal or one with a little heel or if you haven’t tried wedges yet, it’s now time. Also cute runners are a perfect with dresses, shorts, pants, skirts, you name it.

On Monday I featured blazers, cardigans, vests and jean jackets, on Tuesday I featured t-shirts, tank tops and blouses, on Wednesday I featured dresses and skirts and today I’m featuring shorts and pants. Pants and shorts come in all different shapes, sizes, colours and textures. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with colour and length of pants and shorts. Sure some lengths don’t work well with certain heights, but until you’ve tried it on, you don’t know. The key in finding the perfect length of shorts and pants is to see where it cuts you off. You always want it to cut you at your smallest not widest, therefore accentuating the smallest part of you, not the largest. I’ve definitely developed an affinity to cropped pants and my boyfriend jeans. They are the perfect pant to build on my previous posts. Add a tank top to a cute pair of cropped camouflage pant and a cardigan and you’re set.

Summer Wardrobe

Today I will feature two absolute must haves for your Summer wardrobe: skirts and dresses. It is not Summer without gorgeous maxi skirts, shirt dresses, flowy skirts and printed skirts. I love that skirts and dresses come in all different shapes, sizes, prints and fabrics. Gotta say my favourite skirts right now are maxi skirts. They pair perfectly with the t-shirts and tank tops from yesterday’s post and you can layer your cardigan, blazers, vests and/or jean jackets with them for a cool Summer night (Monday’s post). The idea is to build on pieces that you already have and to purchase pieces that are affordable. Dresses are the perfect piece to grab in the morning, throw it on with a pair of sandals, wedges or runners and add a cardigan or jean jacket and head out the door. They are no fuss, easy peasy!!!!!! When it comes to dresses and skirts, play around with different lengths, patterns and colours. Summer is the perfect season to wear bold, bright colours!!!!!

Building A Summer Wardrobe: T-Shirts, Tank Tops & Blouses

I wanted to remind you all to please vote for me for Vancouver’s Top Mom Blogger. You can vote once a week for 2 weeks. It runs from Friday May 23 until Friday June 6. Summer Wardrobe

Yesterday, I featured affordable cardigans, blazers, jean jackets and vests. Today I will be discussing t-shirts, tank tops and blouses, all wallet friendly!!! I am very much a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl and in the Summer, I become a t-shirt and shorts, cropped pants or skirt kind of girl. I realized as I was looking through my Summer items that I’m in desperate need of some basic white t-shirts and tank tops. I don’t know about you, but I basically wear my white t-shirts for a season or two and then they get stretched out of shape and/or permanently stained. So last weekend, Gap was having an amazing sale on t-shirts and tank tops for $8 and I went to town. For $120 I was able to buy 9 items, including 4 t-shirts, 4 tank tops and 1 blazer. Since I am on the Gap’s mailing list, I received an email notifying me of their great deals on t-shirts and tank tops and was able to save a boat load of money in the process.

T-shirts, tank tops and blouses are a must in every woman’s wardrobe!!!!!! T-shirts and tank tops can be dressed up with blazers like from yesterday’s post, wear them with cardigans, under vests and jean jackets. Tank tops layer well under blazers and cardigans. Blouses are the perfect piece to dress up shorts and jeans. Again these pieces are perfect to carry you through pretty much all four season. The key to ensuring that your t-shirts and tank tops aren’t boring is to find different necklines, patterns and colours. Try a striped v-neck t-shirt, a ribbed tank top or a floral blouse. These will all work well in your wardrobe to be mixed and matched with your shorts, cropped pants and dresses.

Building A Summer Wardrobe

Before I get to this amazing series of posts about how to build a Summer wardrobe, I wanted to thank all of you for your support. I asked you to vote and you’ve answered. In case you’re wondering what I’m talking about, on Friday I announced that voting has begun to choose Vancouver’s Top Mom Blogger and I am one of the nominees. You can vote once a week for 2 weeks. It runs from Friday May 23 until Friday June 6. All you need to do is click on this link, find Agnes Mayer, Vodka Infused Lemonade and press vote. It’s that simple. Although you can only vote once a week, you can vote for me using different devices, like your IPad, Labtop, phones and any computer you have access to. My point is please vote for me on as many devices as you can. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Summer Wardrobe

Now onto my Building a Summer Wardrobe series. I know that it can be quite frustrating trying to build a Summer wardrobe, so I be featuring different items to help you build up you Summer wardrobe. The items included will be versatile, you can wear them in other seasons and I will include items at different price ranges. The point of this series is to show women, especially moms, that you can build up your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Before you go shopping here are some helpful hints to help keep you on budget and to facilitate shopping:

  • Sign up to be on the mailing list of your favourite stores. This way when they have sales, you’ll be the first to know. For instances last weekend, I received an email from Gap that their t-shirts and tank tops were on sale for $8.
  • Start saving through out the year. Put $50 or even just $25 away each week into a separate account and use it only to go shopping. That way when it comes time to go shopping you don’t have to put it onto credit, you have money saved up and you don’t feel guilty.
  • Make a list of items that you want to purchase. It will keep you from getting overwhelmed and when you get into the store, ask the sale associate to help you, let her know what you are looking for.
  • Check out items online to give you an idea of what the store has before you go.
  • Take an inventory of what you already have. There’s nothing worse than buying something you already have, ok there is, buying something that doesn’t fit you properly!!!!
  • Set aside some time to go shopping and don’t take your kids. Go with a friend or just go by yourself. Get yourself a coffee and go shopping. Enjoy it. So many women say they hate shopping but try and have fun. It’s time for you to take care of yourself.
  • Make a budget.
  • Buying things on line can be much cheaper. If you don’t know your size go into the store, try it on and then order it on line. That’s what I do.
  • End of the season is also a really good time to buy for the following year. They have amazing deals.
  • Wait until what you want goes on sale, because eventually everything does, you just need to be patient and vigilant. J Crew is the perfect example. They had a gorgeous red blazer for $218. It went on sale for $149.99 and then it was an extra 50% off. Instead of paying full price at $218, I got it for $75.
  • Take a look around and see if other stores carry the similar item but cheaper. It does pay to shop around.

During the week, each day I will feature different items. I will be starting from the top and working my way down. Today I will be focusing on jackets: blazers, cardigans, vests and jean jackets.

Having at least one blazer, a few cardigans, a cute jean vest and jean jacket will carry you through all four seasons. They are the perfect completer piece and are great layering pieces to have.

Jean Jacket

Old Navy- $ 36.94; Gap- $ 84.95 (40% off until May 26).

Blazer

All three of these fabulous blazers are from the Gap and are 40% until the end of the day today.

Vest

Old Navy- $26; Gap- $69.95 (40% off until the end of the day); Old Navy- $32.95

Cardigan

All three of these cardigans all from Old Navy for $22.94. Click here to see other colours it comes in.

Below are 4 ways I incorporated blazers, cardigans, vest and jean jacket into my Summer outfits:

Head Shot

This entire process has made reminiscent about my blog and how I started it almost 2 years ago. My first post was published on July 13, 2012, titled “Welcome to Vodka Infused Lemonade“. At the time I started to blog, I was really nervous and had no idea what I was doing and honestly I’m still not sure. What I’ve learned these past 2 years is that it’s a constant process of trial and error; there are days where there is no rhyme or reason for why my posts get so many views and other days when it doesn’t; although numbers do matter, don’t stress over it, it’s not worth, instead focus on content that is important to you. Oprah has a great quote “Let passion drive your profession.” It’s true, write about what you care about, because that is the genuine you and that’s what people want to read.

One of the first posts I wrote that was a bit controversial, or at least felt that way to me was “30 year old Teenagers and shirts that make you feel pretty“. When I wrote that post, I was sick and tired of adult women acting like they’re teenagers. The older I get, the more I encounter that, women that are catty, spiteful, hurtful and just plain mean. It felt good, cathartic to write this post. I received many emails thanking me for talking about it. I was very worried about the backlash and honestly there was nothing to worry about. Those people that behave that way will never admit it, but it was nice to get it off my chest and I wanted other women who’ve experienced it to realize they are not alone.

Another quite personal post I wrote “Post Mommy Blues” was very hard to write. In it I admit to having postpartum blues and even depression. To be honest with you, I still find it hard to talk about it, not because I’m embarrassed, but because it reminds me of how down and lonely I felt. I felt like no one around me acknowledged my feelings, they kept telling me that they never experienced that and tried to brush what I was going through under the rug. I didn’t have any mom friends at the time, or rather “real” mom friends and I felt all alone. I felt like I was the only mom going through what I was going through and that everyone else had their act together. It wasn’t until I joined the Coquitlam Mom’s Group when I started to feel like I’m not alone in my feelings and that it’s ok to feel overwhelmed, tired and frustrated. I just wish I had someone in my life back then to tell me that it’s ok and that what I’m feeling is normal. I wrote 2 other follow up posts titled “Moms, Let’s Stop the Hate Speech and Negative Behavior” and “Moms vs Moms: Why Can’t We Just All Play Nicely Together” respectively. The point of all these posts is not for me to say that I’m perfect, but to bring to light our negative and destructive behaviour to one another and start treating each other with respect and love.

A few months ago, I got inspired to do a post and link up called “I am Beautiful“. I was inspired by a video on line where they vamped up women and airbrushed them and took pictures of them and then they video taped their reactions. What surprised me the most was that the women weren’t happy with their “new” fake looks. They missed the qualities and characteristics that make them who they are. I decided to take a picture of myself sans make up and host a link up. I had quite a few brave women join me. Click here to see the link up.

Vodka Infused Lemonade

I love hosting my weekly Tres-Chic Fashion Thursday Link Up where you can link up any fashion related post. I enjoy sharing my hosting duties with a different co-host each week. I enjoy looking at all the amazing fashion. I love the fashion aspect of my blog. I enjoy showing looks that are affordable. One of the reasons why I started this blog was to show other moms that just because you are a mom, it doesn’t mean that we have to dress frumpy. When my son was first born, I felt like crap, but I made an effort to dress up, because I didn’t want the world to see just how tired and crappy I felt. When I dressed up and made an effort, I felt better about myself. I also have a weekly series on one item different ways.

Leather Leggings

Last but not least, I love sharing stories about my family, especially my son. He truly is the apple of my eye and makes my soul sing. This recent post, totally describes my son “Motherhood & My Son Are Like The Colours Of The Rainbow“. One of the things I love most about him is that he is true to himself. He loves Princesses, painting his nails, singing, dancing, the movie Frozen while still acting like a 5 year old boy. One of the posts I’m most proud of is “Why I Paint My Son’s Nails!!!” As a parent, I feel strongly that our job is to empower our children, to listen to their interests and to help them achieve their fullest potential. I believe in supporting our children’s interests and letting them explore who they are.
