Blue, Metallics & A Different Take On Strawberry Shortcake

I want to start off this post by thanking everyone for their sweet and thoughtful comments. You guys are the reason why I love putting my posts together, everyday!!!! I’m sorry if I sounded negative. Sometimes we all just need to vent and that’s what I needed to do on Friday. I promise that I won’t let the numbers get to me. I love doing this blog and I love all the great friends I’ve made and readers that follow me. You guys are truly the best.

Next I want to thank Ginny from My New Favorite Outift for her shout out to me on her blog Sunday. It made my day :). Check her blog out, she always finds the most amazing pieces at her local Thrift store. I wish I was that lucky.

Also MJ from Outfit Posts posted my yellow tank top 2 different ways in her series One piece, Two ways Spring Edition. Check that out as well.

Thanks ladies for giving my blog some love!!!! :)

Many of you guys responded to my question in Friday’s post: pictures taken inside or outside? You guys like outside pictures better. I will do my best to take pictures outside but when it rains it will have to be inside.

Onto today’s outfit. Since the weather here really can’t make up it’s mind, I thought wearing cropped jeans, a t-shirt, cardigan and metallic flats is the perfect outfit for running errands. Great mominform ladies!!!! Comfortable, casual yet fashionable :)

Strawberry Shortcake

I was checking out my weekly Thrifty’s flyer and they had Organic strawberries on sale. I thought since it’s the long weekend, I could make some Strawberry Shortcake. Instead of making it the regular way, I thought I would add my own flair to it.

1. Start by making the vanilla cake. I use Martha Stewart’s recipe for Vanilla Cupcakes and make it into a cake instead of cupcakes. So yummy :).

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups cake flour, not self-rising
  • 1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Spray your 8×11″ pan with non-stick spray. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine flours, sugar, baking powder, and salt; mix on low speed until combined. Add butter, mixing until just coated with flour.

2. In a large glass measuring cup, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla. With mixer on medium speed, add wet ingredients in 3 parts, scraping down sides of bowl before each addition; beat until ingredients are incorporated but do not overbeat.

3. Put the batter into a 8 x 11″ pan and bake between 40-50, until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.

4. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool for 10 mins, after which you remove from pan and allow to sit on wire rack until cool completely.

5. While the cake is cooling you can whip the cream. Place whipping cream into a mixer using the whisk attachment and whisk it until it forms the cream. I also add some vanilla sugar to make it a little sweeter.

Whipped Cream

6. Once the cake has cooled I cut it into small pieces 1-2″ pieces. This is how it differs from the traditional Strawberry Shortcake. Instead of making it all pretty and making different layers, I thought it would be fun to make it into do it your own Strawberry Shortcake. This way you can add as much or as little whipped cream, cake and strawberries as you want.

7. Cut up the strawberries.

All the ingredients you need : cake, whipped cream and strawberries.

Now it’s your turn, have fun with it by making it your own. Kids love this and it’s super yummy.

Book Review of Freakonomics

0061234001

We recently read the book Freakonomics for my bookclub. I have to say I would have never picked up this book, had I not been in this bookclub, but I’m glad that I did. The book is written by a journalist and an economist. Rather than it being a dry book, which is what I had envisioned, it was enlightening and funny at times. It definitely makes you rethink the way you think about things, especially the way you absorb what the media says.

I found it to be a quick read and was well laid out. I especially liked the title of the chapters: Chaper 1: What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Chapter 2: How is the Ku Klux klan like a group of real-estate agents? Chapter 3: Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? Chapter 4: Where have all the criminals gone? Chapter 5: What makes a perfect parent? and Chapter 6: Perfect Parenting, Part 11; or: Would a Roshanda by any other name smell as sweet? You must be thinking what do Sumo wrestlers and teachers have in common? Well according to the authors, cheating is what they have in common. More specifically, cheating to help the greater good. My other favorite chapter is the one about why drug dealers still live at home? I never thought about how they run their businesses and according to this book, they run the drug dealing business like one would run a McDonalds. I won’t go into further details. I’ll let you guys read it for yourselves!!!

The idea of this book isn’t to convince you that the author is right. The point is to get you to change the way you take in information; to question what people say and to not take things at face value. He discusses how when people give you stats, they are exaggerated on purpose to get people’s attention and how stats are always influenced by the person giving it. The message is question what people are saying and make up your own ideas of things.

They bring up some very interesting points such as the real reason the crime rate went down. They attribute it to Roe v. Wade and the fact that abortions became legal in 1973. They suggest that because those children, who otherwise would have been born to poor parents, would most likely become criminals, were now aborted, the number of potential criminals went down. It definitely is a very controversial statement and conclusion. I’m not here to argue whether I agree or not, I’m simply stating what they say. It certainly is something to think about.

I would recommend this book to read as it gives you new insights into what you believed and makes you rethink the way you take in information. Have you read this book? What are your thoughts?

May this blog inspire you to try and see things in a different and perhaps more open way.

Red, Blue & Stripes

I spent part of yesterday in search of Star Wars themed decorations for my son’s birthday. He is so excited. I can’t wait for him to see his R2D2 cake. He’s been talking about it for months now. Gotta say I never thought I would like Star Wars as much as I do. I love watching my son get so excited.

This is what I am wearing today: a blue striped shirt, boyfriend jeans, military inspired jacket and my Toms. I’m in a casual, comfy mood.

How To Style A Simple T-Shirt, Printed Pants & Giveaway

On Saturday I had to get some things at the mall and these printed black pants from the Gap caught my eye. I know I’ve said it before that the most printed pant I’ll ever wear is my pastel pink polka dot ones, seen here. Well I’m eating my words because I fell in love with these and at 40% I couldn’t resist!!! With the weird, unpredictable weather we are having these are perfect :).

How To Style A Simple T-Shirt

I had Saturday off and I ran errands with my son, while my husband attended a work conference. I picked up this fabulous pink t-shirt from the Gap for $10 and I thought this weekend would be the perfect time to wear it. Many people have asked me how to dress up a simple t-shirt, so here you go. The simplest way to dress up a t-shirt is to add a great necklace and a jacket.

Momiform and Highschool

Happy Monday Everyone!!! The weekend was crazy. It started off with Friday finishing off a Curious George cake for my friend’s daughter’s 5th birthday, working on this post and running some errands. I worked all weekend (which was a mad house and I got recognized from my blog!!!), and my boys were busy bees. My son had 2 birthday parties on Saturday, so my poor husband had to cart him literally from one to another. Not sure who was more tired by the end of the day!!! :) Here is the cake I made for my friend’s daughter’s birthday.

Curious George cake

The outfit I was wearing on Friday is one that I would be consider to be a staple in my wardrobe. I would go as far as to call it my “momiform”: uniform for moms- boyfriend jeans, sweater layered over a white oxford shirt, flats and my pink trench coat. I accessorized with a Michael Kors gold watch and a cobalt studded cuff bracelet. Since it’s supposed to finally be Spring here this week, you will be seeing a lot more flats, maybe even wedges and my boyfriend jeans. HOORAY!!!!! I define this as my “momiform” because it’s comfortable yet fashionable. I’m not wearing my Lululemon’s out of the house, but I am still just as comfortable as if I did. By the way did you hear some of Lululemon’s black yoga pants are see-through? Click here for the article. Another reason, ladies to not leave the house in yoga pants, unless you are actually going to workout or to yoga. Anyways, I digress. Here is what I wore Friday.

Highschool

In the most recent edition of In Style magazine I read an article that asked celebrities: “How would your high school teachers describe your younger self?” My immediate response was “talkative”. By the way so was Reese Witherspoon’s response, just a little FYI!!! They had to separate me from my friends all the time. I’m expecting the same thing from my son. He is like his mother, a social butterfly. In my grade 12 yearbook a friend compiled all of our grad pictures and added what we would most likely end up being/doing. This is what ended up in the year book:

IMG_2500

I was watching CSI Las Vegas on Wednesday and they had an episode on about a killing at one of CSI’s highschool reunion. The poor guy was dreading it, because he wasn’t one of the “popular kids” in highschool. For some it was their glory days, for others it was a memory they wish they could forget. So how was your highschool years? I actually didn’t mind highschool. Most of the mean girls had left by then and we were all pretty much left alone. It was great. Would I describe it as the best days of my life? No, it wasn’t. It was certainly better than most and I was thankful that my juniorhigh years were far behind me.

At a playdate recently, we were discussing school and how everyone places so much importance on it. LIke how well you do in highschool, depicts your future. The truth is that it doesn’t. Honestly highschool has nothing to do with who I am now. Getting good grades doesn’t mean anything 20 years down the road if you haven’t done anything with your life. We get so involved in highschool and feel like it’s the be-all end-all, when in reality it’s a small part of our lives. I think back to the person I was in highschool and I’m not the same person. I don’t let who I was back then define who I am now. That’s the advice one of the CSI character’s gave to the other: “you have to let go of back then and move on”. It’s hard to do. I know for me juniorhigh was awful. I was teased, bullied and made fun of on a regular basis, but I don’t let that define me now. Sure I still carry some of those insecurities with me, but I’m not that person and I’m not 14 years old anymore. Thank God I’m not. At 14, I had braces, the big “Sally Jessy Raphael” glasses, long brown scraggily hair and huge teased bangs!!! Don’t make fun, because I know that most of us have one of those pictures lying around !!! Thank God those days are long gone. Sometimes I still feel like that insecure 14 year old girl I used to be and then I remind myself that I am no longer that young, girl; that I have the power.

So how would you describe highschool? Is it something you wish to forget or to relive?

May this blog inspire you to make your own momiform or to recreate my look.

Pink, Cobalt, Stripes and What I Wore To Work Link Up

Before I get to today’s post a little FYI: those of you lower mainland moms, DON’T TAKE YOUR KIDS TO CHAPTERS FOR SPRING BREAK ACTIVITIES!!!! It’s absolute chaos!!! They truly mean’t well and it’s free, but it’s completely unorganized and full of chaos!!! :( Next year they should have a sign up sheet and only those that register should be allowed to attend, because it’s crazy and in the end no one has fun. Ok, well we had a bit of fun and my son got some Lego out of the deal, but it’s not worth your patience or energy.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, today I am linking up with Tara from Mix & Match Fashion for her “What I Work To Work Link Up. It’s always hard for me to post a fabulous outfit because I wear scrubs at work. So today I decided to show what I would normally wear to work and what I wish I could wear to work.

Burgundy, Boyfriend Jeans, A Deer & Lace Link Up

I had lots of great comments regarding yesterday’s post about the banana bread. It did turn out very yummy. If I could, I would send you each a piece :). Our playdate was lots of fun. My son had the time of his little life. He loves playing with his friends. Us, the moms, managed to have brief, uninterrupted snippets of conversations. Oh well, at least the kids had fun. That’s what mom’s nights are for :)!!!!

Last night I was featured in Melissa Carr’s blog (The Thirties Grind) series The “Real” “Real” Housewives of Vancouver. Click here to read the post.

This is what I am wearing today: my burgundy Tippi sweater, my boyfriend jeans, my bow ballet flats and my trench coat. It’s cold and supposed to rain, but I DON’T CARE!!! I’m so tired of not being able to wear Spring clothes!!!! So I’m protesting and wearing my boyfriend jeans anyways. Let’s hope I don’t freeze my ass off today.

Guess what I saw as I stepped outside onto my deck? A deer, just hanging around, waiting for some apples. We have a soft spot for the deers and they just love my son.

I decided to pair my lace skirt with a color block cardigan and my favorite black and white blouse.

1 Sweater, 5 Different Ways

Happy Monday morning everyone. Hope you all recovered from your St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans!!! :) I worked yesterday, so there wasn’t too much of that going on.

Recently I read a article in the April issue of People Style Watch about how to style a simple grey sweater. I thought hey I have a grey sweater and I’m always looking for new ways to style it, why not do a post about it. So here it is: my version of 1 Sweater, 5 Different Ways.

Preppy

Preppy Look

Top (Guess) Sweater (Jacob). Pants (J Crew). Shoes (Aldo). Purse (Olivia & Joy).

Preppy: Pair this simple grey sweater over a collared blouse and add a bright crop pant for a pop of color. Layer on some pearls and stack on some bracelets to accessorize and finish off the outfit with some flats.

Going Out

Going Out

Leather Jacket (Danier Leather). Boyfriend Jeans (Gap). Sweater (Jacob). Necklace (Stella & Dot). Shoes (Aldo). Purse (Mat & Nat).

Going Out: Pair this sweater with a boyfriend jean, add some nude heels and a leather jacket to add some dimension to the outfit. When putting together an outfit to go out adding a statement necklace, leather jacket and heels makes the grey sweater more exciting.

Casual

Casual Look

Jacket & Scarf (Gap). Jeans & Sweater(Jacob). Flats (Aldo). Purse (Fossil).

Casual: I couldn’t decide between which flats I like better with this outfit. Which ones do you guys like? For a casual look add a pastel jean, flats, scarf and jean jacket. Give your casual outfit a pop of color with a bright scarf.

Dressy

Professional Look

Blouse (Guess). Sweater (Jacob). Skirt (J Crew). Heels (Nine West). Purse (Coach). Bracelets (Stella & Dot & Poshlocket). Necklaces (J Crew & My Name Necklace).

Dressy: Layering a grey sweater over a fabulous blouse, pairing it with a graphic print skirt and heels makes this grey sweater office appropriate.

Conservative

Conservative

Jacket & Sweater (Jacob). Blouse (J Crew). Pants (Gap). Heels (Aldo). Purse (Coach).

Conservative: Whenever I think about conservative I think about a blazer. Start with a fabulous blazer and again layering a statement blouse under the sweater makes the sweater stand out. Add a great pant and heels and you’re set to go.

May this blog inspire you to take a look at your sweaters and see the different ways you can style them. Remember it’s all about playing with what you have and a grey sweater doesn’t have to just be a “grey sweater”. It is a blank canvas and can be anything you want it to be. Good luck. Let me know how you like to style your grey sweaters.

Happy Monday Everyone!!!

Emerald Green Cardigan & Vancouver Named Third Worst Dressed City In The World

This is what I am wearing today: a stripe jersey dress, emerald green cardigan and boots. It has been raining like it never wants to end for the past couple of days. It’s all because of some tropical storm. This is a perfect outfit to take my son to music class and run errands in. The dress is super comfortable and the cardigan keeps me warm.

MSN Travel Rates Vancouver As The Third Worst Dressed City In the World, Thanks To Yoga Pants!!!!

This post started out as something attached to yesterday’s post, but I quickly realized that I had much more to write than I thought. So here are my thoughts on Vancouver being named the World’s third worst dressed city.

Vancouver was recently rated the third worst dressed city in the world by MSN Travel. Click here to read part of it. Not sure that Vancouverites should be proud of that distinction. We can’t blame MSN Travel or be surprised by their findings. I mean everywhere I look, people are out and about in yoga clothes. That includes people walking their dogs, going out to restaurants, dropping their kids off at school and going to yoga/exercise. Where is the pride in how we dress people?!!!! A friend of mine recently took a picture of a woman at a restaurant, dressed in yoga pants and red boots. I’m not sure what that woman was thinking?? Was she thinking that because she put on red boots that it was ok to wear yoga pants out to dinner? Well it’s not!!! It may seem easier to leave the house in yoga pants, but how good can you really feel about yourself?

You don’t need money to dress nicely. You need time, patience and have the clothes in your closet. Many women say that they wear yoga pants because it’s more comfortable. I think that it’s because women don’t take the time to go shopping and have clothes in their closet that make them feel good. I bet if I asked women if they felt pretty in what they were wearing, the majority would answer no. They would explain that they wore that outfit because a) it was convenient b) it was the only clean thing they had and c) they don’t have anything else to wear.

One of my goals when I started my blog was to show women, mainly other moms out there, that you can dress nicely and still be a mom. It takes some time and effort, but it pays off. I know that when my son was first born, every part of my body hurt in one way, shape or form. I made a conscious effort to at least dress up so I didn’t look as bad and as tired as I felt. Many moms use the excuse that their kids will pull on their jewelry or spit up on their clothes, and that’s completely fair. But you can’t walk around for the next 3-5 years in yoga clothes and continue to use that as an excuse. Listen, I know it’s not easy being a mom and trying to feel good with a body that you don’t even recognize. It sucks when you don’t fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes and you don’t want to wear your maternity clothes. That’s when you need to embrace your “new” body and buy a few items that make you feel pretty and are versatile. If you feel good about what you are wearing, you will feel better about yourself. Sure your body isn’t the same but that doesn’t mean you still can’t look and feel good, then when you lose the baby weight you can embrace your new body even more.

A friend of mine, who happens to sell Stella & Dot, was saying that when she does a trunk show, the women say that they have no place to wear the jewelry. Give yourself a reason to wear something sparkly, that makes you feel good. For example, yesterday after dropping my son off at preschool, I went grocery shopping. I put on a couple of bracelets and earrings. Sure no one was going to see them, but it made me feel good. It made me feel pretty. One of my favorite pieces of advice from TLC’s show “What Not To Wear” is does the outfit make you look pretty? If it doesn’t, then move on and find yourself something that does. Yes it takes time, but don’t you deserve it? Don’t your family and husband deserve it? If for no other reason, then do it for your kids. You should really be doing it for yourself, but if you can’t, then do it for your children.

It’s time Vancouver gave back the distinction of being the world’s third worst dressed city and made the world’s best dressed list.

May this blog inspire you to go out and purchase something that makes you feel pretty. That if you are one of the many that wear yoga pants a lot, that you try and put on pair of jeans and a nice top, or add a bracelet or necklace to your outfit, and feel good about yourself.

Happy Hump Day Everyone!!!!

Stella & Dot Giveaway & Sunshine!!!!

I worked all weekend and yesterday was a gorgeous day. Lucky for me today is also a gorgeous one. I’m amazed at the difference in my mood when the sun is shinning. For all of you who don’t live in Vancouver, it pretty much rains here from November to May/June. So although the air is fresh and the grass is green all year round, the rain can really get to you. Hence why I’m so excited for the sunshine!!!! I feel like a different person. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still exhausted from working two 12 hrs shifts, but the sunshine sure helps get me out of bed and face the day.

This is what I came home to yesterday:

IMG_2257

I ran out of my perfume a few weeks ago and I had casually dropped a hint to my husband and this is what I came home to. My son was so happy to give it to me. My husband tells me that my son had to carry it out of the store all by himself. I’m one lucky Mama :) Thanks boys for making coming home from a long day at work so special!!!! xoxo

This is what I’m wearing today: a red and white stripe cardigan, trouser jeans and bow ballet flats. Any excuse to start wearing anything resembling Spring and I’m there. Like I said the sun is shinning something fierce today so my pictures look a little more “angelic” than normal :).
